Matt and Jen

I sighed, passing the homecoming posters in the hallway of school, shamefully staring down at my sneakers, embarrassed that I didn’t have a date. My black hair fell into my face and I did my best to brush it away. I pulled on the corners of my brown cardigan. My friend Gracie tapped on my shoulder.

“Hey, babe!” she chirped. Easy for her to say. Her boyfriend Taylor had asked her to the dance weeks ago. She wore a pretty white dress with a blue jean jacket and a brown belt wrapped around her waist. Her brown boots were shiny and cute and her hair was nicely curled. I had rolled out of bed at the last minute today, throwing on a tank top and sweater and pulling on my favorite pair of comfy leggings. I thought I looked fine. My hair was straight as usual and I had thrown on a pair of Sperry’s. It was always a struggle for me to get up in the morning. But Gracie always seemed ready. She must be a vampire… so she never has to sleep.

“Hey,” I droned. I rubbed my eye.

“Do you have a date yet?” she asked, smiling big and bright again.

“Is that even a question?” I asked sarcastically.

“Sorry, hun. I’ll find you a date, I promise!” Right then, Taylor, Gracie’s boyfriend, walked up and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. He pulled her into his chest, kissing her sweetly. I sighed, trying to avoid looking at them. It made me so jealous. It would be so much easier if Gracie and Taylor could realize who I really wanted. I was totally, in love with Taylor’s best friend Matt. Matt Espinosa, the only one that I wanted.

Gracie had been trying to set me up with different boys for the past month. But none of them were even close to Matt. Too cocky or too shy. I wanted someone like Matthew. But I could never admit to Gracie that I loved him. It was just too embarrassing, him being a good friend and all. She would make fun of me to high heaven!

“Taylor, we need to get Jen a date!” Gracie said, holding onto Taylor’s hand. He adjusted the blue bandana around his head and glanced at me. His eyes narrowed, focusing in on me.

“I know,” he said, squeezing Gracie’s hand and looking down at her. “How about Matt? He doesn’t have a date.” Gracie looked at me, her eyebrows high. I tried to hide my excitement. I nodded gently are her, looking up at Taylor.

“I’ll talk to him at lunch,” Tay said before kissing Gracie once again and walking away to his third period class.

I sighed, stepping into the cafeteria, and looking around for Gracie and Taylor. I scanned the room, my eyes searching over the tables. I zoned in on Gracie who was sitting atop the table in the back, holding Taylor’s hand. She was smiling and pointed over at me when she noticed I was standing there. Matt was sitting next to Taylor and looked up at me. I shoved my hands into my pockets and tipped my head down as I made my way through the tables. People sneered at my messy bed head hair, but I didn’t care. Matt wouldn’t care, right? He would admire me for who I was and that’s all that I care about. I was so wrapped up in my thoughts that when I finally made my way to the table, I had slipped on something. My hands flailed into the air and I felt my legs fly out from under me.

All of a sudden, an arm reached out and grasped my shoulder. I was pulled by a strong arm into someone’s firm chest. They smelled of Old Spice, the same cologne that my uncle wears. It was a musty but comforting smell, the kind that you’d like to smell every time you’d fall asleep. I looked up into Matt’s beautiful eyes. His eyebrows rose as he held me.

“Hi…” he said, obviously lost, staring at me.

“Hey,” I said.

“So. You’re Jen.”

“And you’re Matt.”

“I think I like you.”

“I think I like you, too.”

“Do you want to go to the dance with me?”

“Yes. That’d be perfect.”
