Hayes and Lisa

“Hmm… you going?” Gracie asked, prancing up beside me. It was loud in the hallway in our middle school, but I could hear her high-pitched voice above everyone else here. She wore a floral skirt with a jean jacket on top. Her hair was straight down with a bandana tied around the top. Her boots clicked against the ground when she walked and happiness literally radiated off of her.

I gazed at the poster for the 8th grade dance. It had lights all around the edges and snowflakes decorating the white poster board. I sighed, staring at the big blue words, ‘8th GRADE FORMAL,” written across the top. To tell the truth, I really wanted to go, but I didn’t have a date. I didn’t want to go alone, because I didn’t want to look like a loser. I could’ve gone with Gracie, but her friend Jack had asked her before I asked her to go with me. I really wanted this boy to ask me… but let’s be real, he’d never ask someone like me! He was practically famous. He probably didn’t even know who I was. Well maybe he knew that I was good at science. I mean we were lab partners last week. But that’s it.

“I wanna,” I said to Gracie, “but I don’t think so.”

“Aww, babe! Why not?” she asked, shoving a piece of pink gum into her mouth and chewing it. I could smell the strawberry fruitiness coming from her mouth.

“Don’t have a date,” I put plainly, like it was normal.

“Come on,” Gracie said. “I’m sure someone will ask you.”

“Whatever,” I said, turning away from the poster and walking towards my locker on the far side of the hallway. I gazed down at my converse sneakers that scratched against the old tile floors. I brushed some of the hair out of my face and looked up, only to be pushed into something firm and collapsing onto the floor.

I landed with a thud a top something strong… must have been a person? “Oh, I’m so sorry,” I said, brushing more hair away from my face. I looked up to see who the person was and stopped right in my tracks. I was gazing into a pair of gorgeous blue eyes, a cute nose and a head of beautiful brown hair. It was Hayes.

“No, no, babe, don’t be sorry. It was my friend’s fault,” he laughed, helping me up. I was frozen. He called me babe. What?

“Oh… uh… okay,” I stood. I rubbed my arm uncomfortably and turned to see Hayes’ friend, Jack, Gracie’s date, laughing his head off.

“Dude!” Hayes said, gently punching the guy in the arm. He walked over to the other guy and tried to whisper something, but it came out a little louder than implied. “I know I told you I thought she was pretty, but you didn’t have to shove her over,” he said.

Hayes walked back to me and gave Jack a dirty look. “Are you okay? Sorry about him, he’s so annoying sometimes.”

“Yea, yea, I’m fine…” I said, avoiding eye contact with the boy.

“Are you sure?” he asked, reaching out and holding my hand in his. I froze, yet again, and looked up into the cold blue eyes. They were somehow inviting. I nodded frantically, gripping onto his fingers. “Good… now uh, Lisa,” Hayes said. “I was wondering… do you have a date for the formal?”

I shook my head rapidly back and forth.

“Oh, that’s cool. Do you think you’d like to go with me?”

I nodded my head rapidly up and down.

Hayes smiled. I did too. He hugged me. I hugged him.

“You’re beautiful, you know that?”
