Beach Party Breakup? - Matt Espinosa Imagine for  Alana

“Alana, wait!” Matt yelled. His voice sounded urgent, panicked even. It cracked when he said my name, and I could hear the sobs coming from behind me. I was stomping towards the edge of the beach, letting the water run across the sand and through my legs. But it didn’t feel as comforting as it used to. It was cold and hard, like how my heart was feeling. My feelings were killing me, eating me from the inside out. I couldn’t believe he could cheat on me?! After all we’ve been through, and Matt being the kind of person he is, how could he do that to me? I know I sound so stupid. I should’ve left him so long ago. But something about him always pulled me back. “I’m sorry!”

There were tears pouring out of my eyes by now, some dripping down my cheeks, others falling into the slowly rushing water that flooded around my feet. The white dress I wore was now soaked from the bottom up to my knees and I had my arms crossed across my chest. Tendrils of hair flew about in front of my face. They were darker than the blonde’s, who had been making out with my boyfriend ten minutes earlier. They were pressed up against the wall behind the building where this year’s big beach party was. She was practically sucking his soul out. It was terrible and probably one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had to suffer through.

“Lana,” he said, his voice closer now, right up against the back of my neck. It wasn’t as soothing as it used to be. I could feel his hot breath in contrast to the cool sea breeze passing by. The tears were still soaking my face, allowing the black mascara to set into my skin. His hands traced around my arms, clasping each other in front of my belly. His head peeked over my left shoulder and I turned my head to the right, not sure if I could look at him or not. “Shh,” he said, trying to quiet me. I was still distraught, not sure whether or not I should listen to him explain himself. I decided to give him a second chance… or at least a few seconds to tell me what happened.

“What happened, Matthew?” I asked. I rarely used his full name, and when I said Matthew, he knew something was up.

“It wasn’t me I swear,” he whispered. I could feel his tears dripping onto my shoulder. “She kissed me. I was trying to get her off but she was gripping my arms.” I glanced down to see some nail marks on his biceps. I sighed to myself. “I’m so sorry, Alana. You know I would never hurt you. I love you too much to do that,” he said sincerely.

“Okay,” I said. There was nothing else to say. Matt kissed my cheek lightly.

“I love you,” he said.

“I love you, too,” I said back. We stood in each other’s arms for a while, staring out at the waves that crashed onto the beach at our feet.
