For your characters
They need details;
Likes
Dislikes
Hobbies
Interests
Goals
Consistency is also a big thing;
Let's say your character is allergic to apples a couple chapter later don't let them eat apples
If they dislike something keep it consistent and maybe give a reason why
Maybe your writing your story spaces out so you have a detail chapter 2 and now it's chapter 15 it's been a while and you mess up a detail its okay. As long as it's not a big thing or it happens a lot.
As a reader they may be finding your story later and be reading 20 chapters just like that so they will notice a change in details
