Chapter 24

Half an hour later, Atlas walked into the library with Will and walked to a table as Atlas took in the number of students present in the library on a weekend which was less. He placed his bag on the seat next to him as Will took the other side.

"You think we'll be able to get all of it done?"

Atlas looked at Will to answer and his gaze shifted to something behind him. Someone actually. Someone whose back view made his heart skip a beat because of how familiar it was. But he doubted she was the one because the person he thought it was wasn't exactly the study-on-a-weekend type. That only made him question why he almost fumbled at the sight of the person. He told himself it was because he didn't expect to run into her.

Will turned following Atlas' gaze before looking back at Atlas,
"Everything alright?"

"Sure." Atlas said, "I'll get the textbooks."

Will nodded and took a seat as Atlas went to get the textbooks they would need at the same time Vanessa headed back to their table with the textbooks.

"Here we are." She placed them on the table and took her seat.

Makenna sifted through them and frowned at her as she took out one of her airpods,
"You forgot Criminal Psychology."

Vanessa picked one and showed it to her,
"You need a pair of glasses to go with your eyes?"

"That's Russil Durrant's, we need Stanton Samenow."

"But this is what's recommended."

"Yea, they tell us to study the introduction and end up asking questions beyond it at finals."

"You're right." Vanessa got up,

"I'll get it." Makenna got up and headed towards the lines of shelves where she figured the book would be.

Atlas had picked a couple of books and needed one more he and Will had used the last time. He walked to the end of the shelf and took a left heading towards the section at the end of the path. His feet faltered as he walked past something that he saw in his periphery and came to a complete stop then slowly took a few steps back and stopped when he saw her again, her back to him.

It isn't her.
He told himself but still, there was something about her that made him feel mild anxiety. He doubted it was anxiety but it felt very similar.

He was about to turn and walk away when she turned and flipped through a book she had in her hand. He blinked rapidly as her face came into view.

So much for it not being her.
He was hit with another dose of skipping heartbeat and 'anxiety' which was immediately replaced with wonder and curiosity as to who she was.

Of course, he knew who she was but he felt curious in the sense that everything about her confused him. She was this in one moment and the next, she was completely different. She was the hot to her cold and vice versa and everything she'd done so far threw him off. Right then she was the girl he'd met outside the library and the girl he'd encountered the night before was someone else entirely.

Is she bipolar?
He asked himself unaware of his expression which had turned to a frown,

Makenna who'd blocked out the world with the music playing in her head through her airpods, closed the book she was flipping through and placed it back on the shelf and immediately found the one she was looking for at the end of the same section. She reached for it just as her gaze shifted to something at the end of the shelf.

The heck!
She thought without letting her facial expression show any sign of familiarity or reaction as to his presence,

Makenna pulled the book out of the shelf and turned around then headed back to her table leaving Atlas wondering if she hadn't seen him even though she'd looked right into his eyes. Nothing had crossed her eyes or her face, it was almost like she'd looked at a complete stranger in those few seconds which made his frown deepen.

Did she forget who he was?
He asked himself as he resumed his walk back to the end of the path to the section where the book he needed was.

Atlas found the book and headed back to the table where Will waited for him.

"Finally." Will took the books from him, "I thought you got lost."

Atlas took his seat and his gaze betrayed him as he glanced at her table where she was seated with someone across from her, he recognized her as the girl who'd been with her outside the library. There was just no way she'd forgotten who he was but something in her gaze just seemed completely foreign, he wasn't sure if it was because of him or she just wanted it that way and it had nothing to do with him at all.

"Atlas? Are we going to hit the books or what?"

Atlas shifted his gaze from behind Will to Will and nodded as he mentally scolded himself for letting her presence affect him in a way he hadn't thought she ever would. He told himself it was because of the night before and how she'd threatened to go after Thea if he went after Killian. The way she'd even said it like she was looking forward to it and no sign of it being a threat. It came more like a statement she was used to saying frequently than it did a threat.

He needed to be sure that she wasn't unstable or bipolar before he went ahead with his plan to get Killian into Thea's bad books because he'd tried to talk her out of being with Killian the night before and that hadn't worked.

Makenna took a moment to get into studying when she got back to the table after seeing Atlas. He was the last person she'd expected to see or braced herself to see, but there he was; all six-foot-something of him somewhere in the library. She hoped she wouldn't have the displeasure of encountering him again. Not after finding out that he was all good looks on the outside but absolutely evil on the inside.

Who would try to ruin their siblings' happiness?
She wondered and closed her eyes to ward off her straying thoughts before shifting her focus to the words in the book in front of her.

Hey guys,

Happy December! Tis' my favourite time of year. ❄️💃🏽

I hope you guys are having a good read. I'm trying so hard to find the time to write more chapters. And if it isn't already obvious, well, I won't be able to complete it before the year ends which is a first for me.

Anyway, I hope the wait and slow update is worth it in the end.

See you guys next Saturday. Have a great day today!

Love,
Jane Lanett. ❤️
