Diana Reid was a paranoid schizophrenic. And while the older she got the more her symptoms portrayed as confusion, in her earlier years of her unmedicated nature, she was more paranoid and delusional.
After William Reid left his family, she became depressed, which didn't mix well with her schizophrenia. She became incredibly fearful of the outside world. She kept her son, Spencer Reid, in their home at all costs. Since the age of four, he had had almost zero social interaction. Eventually, when he was eighteen and no longer needed a legal guardian, he admitted his mother into a psychiatric hospital to get help, and he tried to continue with his life. Having been sheltered from public schooling, and barely even remembering talking to another human besides his mother, Spencer did not adapt to the world very well. His mother was in such an altered state for more than 90% of his childhood that she never home schooled him, or even really taught him how to do basic math or properly speak. Luckily, Spencer was a prodigy in his own right, so he was able to educationally recover quickly. Unfortunately though, his social skills lacked incredibly, and six years later he joining the BAU. By then he had accumulated three Ph.Ds and two Bachelor's degrees, among other educational acolytes. Jason Gideon scouted him for the Behavioral Analysis Unit after visiting his FBI class some odd day. He took an unusual interest in Spencer. His introverted nature and clear developmental delays sparked Gideon's curiosity, and he wanted to help Spencer if he was able to.

After working with him with the promise that he'd join the BAU when he was able to interact with people better, he did fulfill that promise within the next two years.
Spencer was beyond ecstatic about his new job, but was worried he'd be outcasted and ostracized by the people around him, a fear his mother had instilled in him and was her reasoning behind keeping him locked inside their house. Gideon eventually found out about Spencer's family and the unfortunate events that circulated his relationship with his mother and his upbringing, he felt nothing but sympathy for the young man. It was ironic considering that one of the only things that Spencer could consistently and coherently express was his dislike of sympathy. He always said he never wanted sympathy to be given to himself, so he would never give it to anyone else either. Unfortunately, this caused Spencer to come off incredibly rude and arrogant. He had absolutely zero social skills and didn't have the most innate ability to read social cues. But because of his eidetic memory and high IQ, he held onto information well. Gideon taught him the ins and outs of profiling, and he remembered it all and applied every piece of information to every case he was ever on.

But regardless of Spencer's brains and other skills, on face value he was a stuttering, quiet, and dorky kid who didn't seem to like anyone.
Gideon managed to convince his higher ups to let him on the BAU anyway. He couldn't help him anymore beyond that. He now had to carry himself if he wanted to go any further.

"Reid, come here." Gideon ordered, looking up from the files in his hands to the man he called to make sure he was actually coming.
Once Spencer reached him, he made no confirmation of his presence, but Gideon knew he was there.
"Read over these for me. Be ready to summarize the info to the team." He handed Reid a thick stack of papers imbedded in multiple manilla folders.

Reid, though, refused to take it from Gideon's hands. He held up his own in discomfort.
"I-I-I...do not-" he stuttered.

Gideon urged with the papers in his hands.
"What Reid? Use your words, you're not a child." He knew what Spencer was reluctant about, but if he wouldn't articulate his feelings then he'd have to do as ordered. Gideon wasn't going to be at his side forever, translating his half-ass sentences for important people he needed to communicate with.
