The Seventeen Promises They Made (An Alec Volturi Love Story)

I walked to my room to put all my clothes away. Just as I stored my suitcase in a shelf, Alec walked in. There was a period of awkward silence before he spoke up.

"Why did you defend him?" he asked.

I shrugged. He walked towards me and grabbed my shoulders, turning me around to face him.

"Tell me." he said, his eyes boring into mine.

"He's your friend. And you know that I will stand by you no matter what." I said.

"But why did you stop me in the first place?" he asked.

I sighed and dropped on the bed, defeated.

"There are so many things that you don't know." I whispered.

"So tell me." he said more gently, kneeling in front of me.

"What if I don't want to?" I whispered.

"Please?" he asked, brushing a strand of my hair to the side.

I sighed in defeat and nodded, concentrating on the mate bond and sending him a sort of 'story' like he did with me.

-flashback-

I was walking in your old village. I was so depressed that you hadn't brought me here like you promised. I was thinking about the ten other promises that had to be broken before I could finally achieve happiness. I was walking around randomly under the blanket of darkness when I collided against a wall that wasn't really a wall. It was a stranger. 

"I'm sorry." I said, looking up at the stranger.

I knew from the moment my eyes laid upon him that he was a vampire. There was no doubt about it. He had the same bright red eyes as me and dirty blond hair.

"That's quite alright." he said, helping me up.

We introduced ourselves and found out that his name was R.J. Maddox. He seemed to stiffen when he found out that I was from the Volturi, but warmed up to me after that. He invited me to stay with him in the mountains. He said that he lived alone and often wanted some company so I agreed. Over the next few months, he greeted me with the same, if not even more, hospitality than the day before. I found out that his gift was control over the mind and future seeing, even more powerful than that pixie, Alice. That was when I found out that the Volturi were coming for him. You guys wanted him to join your coven. I apologized to him because I knew that if I never came, you guys would have never found him. Just when I was walking out, he grabbed my shoulders and smashed his lips into mine. It felt like a normal kiss...not as special as ours. I guess I almost willingly kissed back. He told me that he loved me and that nothing was my fault. I told him that I loved him back...but I was so uncertain. When I blanked out, he shook me awake and expressed so much concern that I was almost surprised. I thought about how you never cared for me as much as he did that moment. When I thought about how little time I had, from cancer, he thought that I was talking about the time we had with each other. He told me that he wouldn't let you guys lay a finger on me. He promised. From the moment he did, I knew that this relationship would not last. A while later, I felt that you guys were coming so I told R.J. to leave. When he didn't, I made my shadows drag him away. I knew that we didn't stand a chance, even with my gift. He told me that whenever I spoke of the coven name, my face was filled with pain and longing...for you. While my shadows were dragging him away, he told me that I was his. I was not an object. I never was to begin with. That's when you come into the story. I don't think we need to relive that. Later, after I left Volterra, I saw that girl from my dreams, which was actually Renesmee. We had an entire argument, or chess game as I called it. I found out that you didn't kiss Corin voluntarily and that I was mistaken. I felt so guilty. So we got in a fight afterwards. When it was over, I found out that it was actually Renesmee and R.J. When I collapsed on the ground, this note popped out of my pocket.

You need to know that I need to destroy the Volturl. They are the main reason that we cannot be together. And trust me. That hurts my heart like nothing else in the entire world. You need to understand that the next time we see each other, it will be war. I want you to join our side but my 'wife' hates you with all her guts. You need to understand that she is not really my wife and I'm just pretending that she is to trick her into helping me destroy the Volturl. Everything will work out right. I promise you. We will live happily ever after.

I knew then and there that I was betrayed. I thought of all the ways that I wanted to die, to be discarded and never thought about again. To be forgotten. The names on the bottom proved it. R.J. was really Ryan James Maddox and his wife was Renesmee Carlie Cullen.

-end of flashback-

"Tell me...how can I trust him after that? It took all my will not to target him first because I know that he meant a lot to you when you were humans." I whispered.

Alec looked at me, shock rippling throughout his face.

"I...." he couldn't make out anything else.

"It's ok. I know you didn't know." I said, closing my eyes.

I felt him climb up behind me and wrap an arm around me.

"Thank you for telling me." he whispered, kissing my neck and resting his head there.

"You deserved to know." I said.

He smiled and closed his eyes. In no time, I was drifting off to sleep.
