It was really difficult for me to make my decision for a top five list because I've read so many Pokémon fanfics on this site that I just couldn't narrow it down to five. I looked at my reading lists and picked out a few that I had liked, only to say, "but what about this one? And I can't forget that one!" I would switch one out for another, then switch it back, shuffling around this way, that way, and the other way.
So I finally decided to set some rules for myself. This list contains only completed books that are still available on Wattpad, and they represent the books that I personally enjoyed the most, not necessarily the books that I thought were objectively of the best quality. I'll be listing them in the order in which I first read them.

This is one of the first Pokémon fanfics that I read on Wattpad. I'm talking about the very early days, back when I had joined the website essentially because I had made a deal with my sister. I had started off with the book she was writing and a book or two from her reading list, and I was searching for others worth a read. As soon as I read the first chapter of Underdog, I remember going to my sister to rave about how good and interesting and funny it was and telling her that she had to add it to her reading list, too.
This is a book that made me laugh. It was a fresh take on Pokémon for me that kept my interest and made me fly through the chapters one after another. It was definitely one of the best Pokémon fanfics on the site at that time, and I think it still deserves all of the fond memories that I have of it.

This book was even more of a fresh take on the Pokémon world for me. I loved the focus on science and environmentalism, the unconventional main character, and just the general realism of it. It was a book where the author clearly knew the subject at hand, and I really appreciated that. The real-world connections really added interest for me, and the writing was good as well. You can never underestimate the power of genuinely good writing, at least in my opinion. The ability to write in a way that's not just grammatically and technically correct but also to form clear, flowing sentences is so important. Even more than that, this book had a well-constructed plot, solid characters, good dialogue structure, and an excellent sense of timing as well.

This is another book that earns its place by virtue of being well written and realistic. I loved the detailed world building and the careful thought put into the mechanics. The Pokémon were all described very well, the relationship between the main character and his Pokémon was strong and well-depicted, and the tension was high. The tone was perfectly suited to the material, and the book itself was just about the perfect length for the material. It's exactly the kind of book that I enjoy seeing on Wattpad.

This is another book that I read for last year's Pokémon Watty Awards. I could repeat everything that I said in my earlier mini review of it. It was a really sweet story that focused on the relationships between the characters in a way that I really enjoyed. It also has a unique take on Pokémon, at least for what I've seen on Wattpad, showcasing how the video games impact the lives of real world fans. It was short and sweet and heartwarming, definitely worth a read.

Velvet Crescent was one of the last books I read for last year's Pokémon Watty Awards. I was feeling pretty tired out from all the reading I was doing, but this one was able to perk me up within the first few chapters. Again, I enjoyed the realistic setting, and it was clear that the author knew her stuff. I've never spent any significant amount of time in a large city before, so it felt like something new and interesting. I liked how some different cultures were shown, and seeing the gangs up close was really interesting. I wouldn't have expected to enjoy the familiar plot mechanic that the book makes use of, but it surprisingly won me over with the way that the author was able to pull it off. This was another well written book that deserves attention.
