Driver's License

It is my 17th birthday,
And it's a special day for me:
There is this test
To see if I am worthy
For my driver's license.

My feelings are all over the place,
For there is a 50/50 chance
I'll get the very object I spent
The last six months training for.

My instructor sits beside me
While the suspense builds;
My hands meet the steering wheel,
And my foot meets the gas pedal.

The course looks simple,
But my heart is pounding;
Sweat is erupting from my skin;
I can't say if that's even a hyperbole.

I can't believe they warm me up
With the hardest part,
Magnifying my stress
With the part I dreaded the most:
Parallel parking.

I drive slowly,
Look at the side view mirrors,
And if I am to make a mistake,
It better not be striking the cones.

The moment of truth comes
When I park the car
Within the confines of the cones,
And to my surprise,
They tell me to continue driving.

The rest of the test is a breeze,
For my only source of stress is gone;
It is only driving through the road,
Making sure I remain in the correct lane,
And stopping whenever there's a stop sign.

When the instructor
Sees a consistent pattern,
He orders me to park the car
To signal that I passed the test.

I struggle to grasp this is real,
But here I am
With the ability
To drive unsupervised for the first time.
