i groaned lowly as i woke up, stirring. i turned, expecting to find jj, but instead was met with an empty spot on the bed. i frowned a bit as i sat up, sleepily rubbing at my eyes.

i got out of bed, going over to my closet to pull out a pair of shorts. i let them hang just below my hip bones. i adjusted the shirt that i was wearing so that it wasn't tucked into my shorts.

i walked out, going to the kitchen and grabbing a cup. i filled it up with water, drinking it before placing the cup in the sink.

i then walked to finneas's room, knocking on his door. i opened the door when he said that i could come in.

"what's up?" he asked, clicking a few things on his computer before pushing out his chair a little to look at me.

"have you seen jess? she wasn't in my room when i woke up." i asked him.

"she's in the backyard with dad. she said that her car engine was messing up or something, and so he's helping her fix it." he told me.

i nodded. "alright, thanks."

"no problem."

i walked downstairs, going to the backyard. jessie's car was parked there, and her trunk was open, though dad was leaning up to close it.

jessie laid in the grass, her hands flying above her as she spoke to dad with a carefree smile. her shirt was off, thrown on to one of the yard chairs, leaving her in her shorts and a sports bra. there was motor oil all over her hands and arms, and some had even got on her stomach, though she didn't seem to care.

she glanced over when she heard the back door shut, and her smile widened. "hi, princess!"

she sat up, sitting crisscrossed. she motioned me over and i walked over to sit in front of her, sitting crisscrossed as well. "hi, baby."

"how did you sleep?" she asked, reaching for my hands.

"i sept good." i answered as i moved my hands away. she furrowed her brows. "your hands are dirty as hell, no thank you."

"come open the door for me so that i can wash them then," she told me as she stood up. "i'm not tryna make your mom mad by getting motor oil all over her door knobs."

i stood up as well, starting to walk to the front door, though jj stopped on the way to give dad a hug, thanking him for helping with her car. i smiled at their interaction.

"can you believe it's already new year's eve?" she asked as we walked through the house.

"no," i let out a huff of air. "this year has gone by fast as hell, but at the same time, it's gone by slowly, if that makes sense."

"right?" she let out a small laugh as she entered the bathroom, starting to wash her hands.

i leaned against the doorframe, crossing my arms as i watched her. when she got all of the oil off her hands and arms, she turned the water off, turning to dry her hands. she looked back to the mirror that was above the sink, raising a hand to push her hair out of face.
