"We need to talk," I announce as I sit down on the bench next to Mia, who looks over at me with a mix of confusion and surprise on her face.

She blinks a couple times before she zones back in, and her face turns normal, and she mutters, "So now you want to talk," and Mia turns to look out at the ocean in front of her.

"What do you mean?" I turn to look at her, confused.

"You haven't spoken a word to me since you've been here, and-" she throws her hands up, "you didn't text me," she finishes quietly.

"You never responded," I counter. I mean, Mia has never even responded to my texts. I'm not sure why she just said that.

"Doesn't mean I stopped looking at them," her little voice tells me, almost silently, with the ocean waves in the background, so it's a little muffled, but I can hear her perfectly fine.

"Really?" My lips form into a small smile, which is growing by the second. Especially as her eyes widen a little, but she shakes her head, neglecting my statement.

"No- I- I was- I- never mind," Mia mutters and crosses her arms over her chest. "What did you even need?" She huffs out, and a piece of hair blows away from her face but lands right in front of her face, which I push away with my finger, and tuck it behind her right ear.

"I'm having a little fun with what we're talking about now, Mi," I stifle my chuckle as I shake my head and look back out to the ocean, focusing on the words that I want to get out and tell her what I'm feeling.

Mia takes an intake of her breath and lays her hand down right next to mine, her pinky just touching mine.

"I guess-" Mia stops mid-sentence and takes another deep breath before she continues. "I guess I need to be honest with you."

"Mia-"

She shakes her head and shuts me right up before I can even start talking. "I haven't been completely honest with you. And- before you say anything, it was my fault, and I'm sorry for any pain I've caused you, Nate. I never intended to make you feel any pain at all, especially from me. I hope," she looks me in the eye as she talks, "I hope you know that I love you."

I bite my cheek and grab her hand in mine. Bringing it up to my lips to give it a quick kiss and a squeeze.

I think she takes that as encouragement because she continues. "Back when we- uhm- first started dating, I would see Coach, you know, around." She licks her lips and shakes her head, "Sometimes, he was really nice to me. Other times, he was scary and weird as shit, and it creeped me out." She retracts her hand from mine and wipes her sweaty hands on her legs. "Then one day, he, well, made me go to his office. He accused me of distracting you," she makes a little annoyed sound, "which now I kind of understand that it was absolute bullshit, but whatever." I smile at my girl. She's growing and understanding, that's my baby.
