"Did you hear something?" I look over my shoulder at my boyfriend, Aidan, who is looking around the beach.
I adjust my position on the beach chair. "No, why?" I look around with him but I don't hear or see anything. Everything seems so calm right now.
"I...I thought I heard maybe a...scream? Or something..."
I laugh. "Don't be ridiculous, I'm pretty sure I would've heard a scream."
"Well it sounded far away, like it came from the forest." When I still don't look convinced, he sits up a bit straighter and changed the topic. To a far worse one. "Did you end up going to Jesse's trial?"
I shake my head. I don't bother to explain myself. After Jesse rejected me, my heart was broken. But when Shay broke up with him, and he tried to get back together with me not long after? I was furious. I never want to be second choice again.
Aidan's voice rouses me from my thoughts. "What's wrong?"
I lean back in the pale blue beach chair. "Nothing. Everything is good now."
This time, I hear a gunshot.
