Chapter Twenty-Six

Scarlett's POV

I stared at him my mouth slightly open. I turned to Roxy silently asking if she knew what he was doing but she shrugged just as clueless as I was. Adrian tapped the microphone and the sound echoed throughout the gym. He then cleared his throat.

"Wow, this is much harder than I thought. Public speaking that is." He paused flashing us all a heart stopping grin as some of our peers sniggered at his nervous state. "You're probably wondering what the hell I'm doing up here no?" he chuckled along with the crowd. "Well to answer your question I'm here to ask a girl to prom." My eyes widened, Who? "Who you ask well... This girl, she's not just any other girl she's probably the most gorgeous girl I have ever met, not to mention the most kind-hearted soul in this room." There was a few "Awe's" from the hopeless romantics in the room. He continued his little display of affection with a small smile on his face. "The way she lights up the room with her contagious smile, the way she makes my heart beat ten to the dozen when she laughs the way she's made me fall completely and incoherently in love with her." My eyes widened. "I'm here to ask her if she'd be my prom date..." he paused and began walking over to our section, that's when I noticed Nova sitting a few seats away from us. Oh god he's talking about Nova, my stomach dropped he's in love with her. I watched him walk straight past her.

"Roxy I think he's talking about you?" I whispered lowly. She looked at me and burst out laughing.

"You're an idiot." She said looking back at Adrian. He made his way over and my heart was beating so hard against my sternum I was waiting for it to beat out of my chest.

"Scarlett Mendoza." He announced and stopped straight in front of me. I looked up at him, his smile was so bright I couldn't help but smile back at him. Then that's when I noticed Chris and his friends were holding up large letters that spelled out Prom?

"Scarlett? Will you be my prom date?" he asked slightly nervous. I didn't know what to say so I kissed him. In front of everybody. The whole senior year was watching us and I had just kissed him. We pulled apart and he was grinning from ear to ear. I hugged him.

"So I take it you will." He said causing me to laugh out a yes. The crowd around us started cheering and I couldn't help but smile. 

"I love you Scarlett. I always have." I stared at him my eyes teared up slightly.

"You really mean it?" I asked my heart in my eyes. He nodded.

I smiled at him and whispered "Well it's a good thing I'm in love with you too." He grinned and kissed me again.

"Smile for the camera guys." Parker said as he shoved the camera in our faces. I turned to him with a happy smile.

"You knew. Didn't you? And did you just record the whole thing?" He only winked at me. I shook my head and laughed at him. Roxy was beside me grinning like a mad woman.

"This, this is the cutest thing I have ever witnessed." She said as she wiped a fake tear from her eye. I hugged her and saw Cameron storming up to us with Clara desperately trailing behind him.

"And this moment is about to end." I groaned before nodding my head in the direction of Cameron and Clara. Adrian had his back to them and he tugged me into his chest. Not spearing them a glance. I looked into his eyes and the happiness shining in them tugged at my heart. His hands encircled my waist and my hands were around his neck.

"What do you think you're doing Jones?" Cameron hissed. Adrian kissed my cheek and I blushed.

"Well I was just about to ask Scarlett to be my girlfriend. So if you would be so kind as to give us a minuet." He said and my eyes widened. Cameron pushed past Adrian and stared at me.

"You're not actually considering this are you Scarlett?" He asked gruffly I didn't take my eyes off Adrian. I nodded.

"Oh I'm more than considering it Cameron. I'm agreeing." I said before I pulled back. Turning to face Cameron. "Just stop it Cameron, okay. Please. I accepted you and Clara I couldn't care any less about what happened now. It's done, we're done. Please okay please just leave me alone." I said tearfully. He reached out and grabbed my hand. I didn't move.

"You really want that? You really want me to disappear out of your life. Just like that?" He asked and in that moment I knew what we had wasn't anything like me and Adrian. It wasn't the all-consuming love I thought it was. Make no mistake I did love him. I still care for him but I'm in love Adrian. I'm undeniably in love with Adrian. I removed my hand from his and caught his gaze. I nodded.

"Yes, I want you to leave. Be happy with Clara, treat her right. Don't break her heart like you did mine okay. Don't screw her over. I get it now. This thing between us has ended, it ended way before it technically did. You just realised it first and I can't hate you for that. But I do hate how you handled it. Instead of talking to me, you cheated. And yeah maybe you wanted us both but I took myself out of the equation so be with her. Okay?" I finished and took a deep breath. He looked at me and then looked at her, his lips twitched into a small smile. He brought me into a hug, I hugged him back.

"I really am sorry." He said as we pulled apart. I nodded.

"I forgive you." I said. Once those words fell from my lips it was like a weight had been lifted from my chest. When I looked at him I no longer felt the sorrow of our situation I just felt lighter. Clara was tearing up.

"I'm sorry, I'm so, so sorry. I was more than just a bitch to you. I was cruel and you didn't deserve any of it. I was just so mad at you because he loved you. I wanted to be you I was so jealous of all the loving glances you shared, all the small moments. Everything. I-I just." She couldn't finish but it was okay. I knew what she was going to say. I nodded.

"It's okay. Now go and be happy." I smiled kindly at her she nodded and she and Cameron left. I exhaled deeply and turned to my friends, they were all staring at me like I had gone mad.

"That, that was big of you." Parker commented. Roxy nodded agreeing.

"Yeah a real tearjerker." She grinned and I rolled my eyes.

"That's only because you have a sappy personality." I quirked causing her to laugh.

The rest of the school day was uneventful. Apart from Chris asking Roxy to prom. She was so shocked she almost tripped over. She agreed none the less.
