"I thought we agreed that we would be honest with each other." Midnight turned to glare at Evan, who stood near the bed with his arms crossed over his chest.

The four of them had retired for the night, and while Evan had planned to return to the pack, his mate had other plans for him, dragging him up the stairs to discuss the taboo topic that was Evan's family.

Sighing, he ran a hand through his hair. "Why do you want to meet them so badly? Was my uncle not enough to steer you away?"

He sucked his teeth. "This isn't about whether or not I want to meet your family. This is about the fact that you're once again keeping things from me."

"Don't stand there and act like you don't keep things from me all the time. We're allowed to have boundaries in this relationship, and not all secrets are bad." The bed dipped under his weight as he sat at the edge, resting his elbows on his knees, then placed his face between his palms. "I'm not going to argue with you about this. My family isn't worth it."

Midnight bit his tongue, forcing himself to swallow the words his mouth was so desperate to let loose, but he knew that Evan had a point, and bickering about this subject wouldn't resolve anything. Walking over to the bed, he sat beside his boyfriend, wrapping an arm around his waist and tugging him closer. Evan shifted his weight until he was leaning against Midnight, his face buried against the scarred neck. The silence of the room offered them the peace they needed at the moment, letting them wordlessly touch each other to express what words could not. Their relationship was not built around a healthy and safe foundation; there were many dangers still out there trying to kill them, like the spirit zombie, for example. But they loved each other more than anything, and nothing would ever be able to separate them. The wolf purred as its mate scratched his scalp gently, pressing small kisses to his temple and cheek.

"I'm gonna have to go back soon," Evan whispered as Midnight nuzzled his hair and stayed where he was, seemingly with no intention to move despite his words. He did have to go back; Romero and Hannibal were going to force him to finish his training and give him extra for running out. The goth hummed an uninterested noise that made the blonde smile, tilting his head back so he could look into the cold gray eyes he adored with every fiber of his being.
