There were times I doubted the decision I had made back then. And this was one of them. But, what was done, was done. I couldn't change anything right now.

"Katherine contacted me when she learned about the cure. We thought we could be of mutual use to one another." I explained to Elena, although I owed no explanation to her.

"Of mutual use?" She repeated my words sarcastically. "Please... You fell for her trap just like every other one of those idiots." She continued.

"You underestimate me Elena. I know who she is. I know what she's done." I replied calmly turning to look at her.

"And you think she's changed? She's playing you, she lied to you Elijah!" Elena pointed out.

"She didn't lie to me about your transformation." I replied back, while she remained silent for a while. "You are not just a vampire, are you? You are something else. You are not yourself." I said looking closely at her. Then I realized. "You've abandoned your emotions. Why?"

"My brother is dead." She replied dryly. I couldn't help but feel shocked. But, the greatest shock came after. "Your girlfriend killed him." I was breathless. "You didn't know?" She asked seeing my shocked expression. "Of course you didn't..."

"She lied..." I said slowly trying to process what I had just learnt.

"Hate to tell you I told you so, but... Duh?" She said in an ironic tone.

Silence fell between us. I didn't say anything and neither did she. I was shocked by the news of Jeremy Gilbert's death. And especially that it came from Katherine's hand. Now, I doubted more and more myself. How couldn't I have seen that?

"I know what it feels like to lose a brother. I'm sorry for your pain... I only hope that you will find you way back to yourself someday..." I spoke first, ashamed of Katherine's actions.

"Just like you hope Katherine will find her way back?" She said standing up. I looked at her trying not to show any emotion. "You still think that the innocent girl you saved from Klaus ages ago is in there somewhere."

"I'd like to think so, yes." I replied.

"She is not. She is a monster now, Elijah! The sweet, pleasant girl you fell in love with way back then, is dead. And she's not coming back."

"I'm not a fool, Elena. Of course this has occurred to me, but what kind of man would I be if I didn't try to find my Katerina beneath this Katherine facade." I said defending my choice. But was I defending my choice against Elena or myself? Everything was blurred right now.

"You boys are all the same." She said having her back turned on me. "Damon and Stefan still think that the girl they loved is still in here somewhere too." She continued turning to look at me.

"I can't blame them for having hope, Elena. It'd be a shame if the world lost a soul as compassionate as yours."

"Your compassion is a gift Elena. Carry it with you always and forever." I smiled remembering what I had written to her when I left Mystic Falls. "I remember reading that in a letter once." She added.

"Well, the writer sounds positively gifted. I'm sure he meant what he wrote." I replied hoping that this girl would find herself again, despite everything that have happened to her.

"I'm sure he did. And it felt good watch that letter burn, along with my old life and along with Jeremy's body." I didn't have time to reply when a snap was heard and Elena fell on the ground unconscious.

My eyes fell on Katherine. "Sorry I got held up." She said with her familiar arrogant tone. She walked past me, while I kneeled over Elena's body. "Oh, come on! She could use a nap. It must have been exhausting trying to be me." The tone of her voice really aggravated me.
