"Hey, uh... what was your name again?"

Since class was over, she had been putting her books back into her bag but paused at his question and turned to face him.

She seemed a bit hesitant to answer him. "Why?" She asked unexpectedly, in an accusing tone.

That caught him by surprise. "Why? Uh, what do you mean why?"

When she remained silent, he said with a smile, "I'm just asking your name, you know. There's no need to get all defensive."

Her eyes were studying his expression, checking to make sure if his question was indeed a harmless one. Then she glanced away, tugging slightly on her scarf.

"My name is Lamees," she mumbled after a moment, and he felt like he was being let in on a secret.

"Lamees?" He repeated it, saying her name for the first time. The name ended with a soft hiss and it felt exotic when it rolled off his tongue. He liked it.

Gunner didn't miss the way she blushed when he said her name. Without another word, she picked up her things and was out of the classroom in seconds.
