"Am I dead?" Trinity asks.

"You are being reborn," Laylah tells her. "Your Quickening has been completed."

"What do you mean? I died before that could happen. Or is it like vampires and dying triggers the change."

Laylah shakes her head. "No." She leads Trinity over to the lake and kneels, waving her hand over it. "Look."

Alaric turns around and catches Trinity in his grip. "Always in the way." He says. "No creature is meant to be immortal." He takes her face in one of his hands.

"No!" Rebekah stands from Damon's grip.

"Happy Birthday Trinity."

"Look at your eyes," Laylah tells her.

Trinity takes a closer look and sees a ring of white surround her pupils before fading. A split second later, Alaric snaps her neck. The image fades. She looks at Laylah. "What does that mean?"

"The Quickening is a rebirth. Your body is adjusting to its new power. By the time that man snapped your neck, you were already gone." She explains, standing up. Trinity stands up as well. "I have much to teach you."

The sound of church bells ringing sirens, and yard work fill the air along with a bright white light. Suddenly, Elena gasps for air and wakes up. She sees Stefan sitting on the end of her bed, watching her. "Stefan?"

"Hey. I'm right here. You've been in and out for hours." He tells her.

"Wh-what happened?"

"You were in an accident."

"Oh my god. Matt is he-"

Damon interrupts from his spot on the window seat. "Alive?" He says, making the two turn to look at him. "Ask Stefan. The hero."

Elena looks back to Stefan. "He's fine." He says.

She sighs in relief. "Thank you. I thought that I...how did you-"

"Save you?" Damon interrupts once again. "He didn't."

"When Jeremy brought you to the hospital before all this happened, your injuries were worse than anyone knew. Meredith Fell made a choice, she used Damon's blood to heal you." Stefan explains.

"And when Rebekah ran Matt's truck off the road, you had vampire blood in your system, Elena."

Elena starts to panic. "Oh my god. Does...does that mean that I...am I dead?" She asks. The brothers say nothing. "No, no, no, no! That wasn't supposed to happen!" She cries.

"Maybe it doesn't have to. I talked to Bonnie; she says she's stronger than ever, there might be something that she can do to help you." Stefan says.

Damon shakes his head. "No, the only thing that's going to help is for you to feed and complete the transition."

"We have all day before she has to feed, Damon. That's a day to exhaust every possible way out of this."

"There is no way out of it. We all know the drill. You feed or you die. There is no door number three."

"I was ready to die." Elena says through her tears. "I was supposed to die. I don't-I don't want to be-I can't be a vampire! If there's something that Bonnie can do we have to try."

"We will. We'll try everything." Stefan comforts her.

Damon scoffs, rolling his eyes. "Your choice, Elena. As always." He stands from his seat and leaves.
