Scary Movie

I jumped and screamed for at least the sixth time, and the movie had only been on for about forty minutes. Shawn chuckled beside me, and I punched his bicep lightly.

"Asshole," I muttered. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be here, huddled under a blanket on the couch while clowns popped out on the screen in front of me. Shawn had been begging me to watch the new "IT" movie, and I finally agreed for some stupid reason even though I knew I was terrified of clowns.

Shawn chuckled again. "It's not that scary, babe."

"Easy for you to say," I complained. "You're not scared of clowns. If I wasn't so scared, I would have gotten up and turned it off already. I have to pee, too, but I can't get up to do that, either."

"How about I walk you to the bathroom? Would that make it better?" he asked in a mocking tone.

"Yes, actually. You should do that."

"All right. Come on," he said, pushing himself up off the couch, and grabbing the remote to pause the movie.

I got off the couch, too, and followed him down the dark hallway to the bathroom. He turned on the bathroom light and stepped back, gesturing for me to go in.

"I'll wait here for you," he said.

I nodded and went into the bathroom, closing the door partially behind me. I quickly peed and washed my hands. I didn't like being alone, even in the brightly lit bathroom.

I opened the door, expecting to see Shawn waiting, but he wasn't there. I stepped out into the hallway and looked into the living room, trying to see if he had gone back in there.

Suddenly a pair of hands grabbed me from behind. I screamed, and whirled on my attacker. It was just Shawn, who was laughing loudly.

"You dick," I yelled, pushing him away from me and crossing my arms. I acted like I was angry, but in reality, my heart was still racing from the scare.

Shawn's laughing ceased, and he examined my face. "You're really shaken up, aren't you?" His voice was sympathetic.

I nodded, still shaking, and he pulled me into his arms. One of his hands gently rubbed my back, and his chin rested on top of my head.

"We can turn off the movie," he said. "I'll watch it some other time."

I nodded again, grateful. He released me, and we walked back to the living room. He turned on the lights and turned off the TV.

He picked up his coat from where it was draped over the arm of a chair and put it on.

"What do you think you're doing?" I asked, crossing the room and pushing the coat off his shoulders. "You're not going anywhere."

"Fair enough," he said with a chuckle. "Come on. Let's get you to bed, then."

We walked down the hallway again to my bedroom. He made sure I was settled under the covers before sliding in next to me. I immediately moved closer to him, wrapping an arm around him and flinging a leg over his legs to make sure he didn't go anywhere.

"All right," I said when I was comfortable. "Can you sing to me?"

"Of course," he responded. He began quietly singing various songs by Ed Sheeran until the scary images flashing through my head went away, and I was finally able to fall asleep.
