Shawn and Geoff are in the studio, working on Illuminate. Shawn knows that he wants to make this album a little mature, so he decides to make a song about one of his sexual experiences.
He's telling Geoff the story so he can help with the song.
"... so I was getting ready to stick it in, right? But then I was like, wait a minute, I wanna do this with the lights on because you're so beautiful. So I turned on the lights, and we kept going."
Geoff says, "Stop right there, dude. That's perfect."
Then he comes up with a "really sexy guitar rift," as Shawn would say in a later interview. Shawn likes it, and he decides to throw "damn" in at the beginning for good measure.
And that's how Lights On was created.
