Leah's POV

Today was the day the kids would go see the school for the first time.

Typically a private open day.

I stayed back in the mansion because of the girl.

I didn't want to leave her alone.

Luca went with the kids.

It served as a good bonding trip for them so I let it be. They should be back soon.

The girl still didn't talk or even touch me, but I interacted with her anyway.

I now sat in the room reading her a story.

It was the 4th book already but she just sat there and listened. Emotionless.

Sometimes it was as though she was in her own world.

The calm atmosphere soon shifted as the kids returned home, their cheerful voices filling the hallway.

'They're back' I smiled to myself.

I had been engrossed in conversation with the girl in her room, reading to her to try gradually coaxing her out of her shell.

But now, the sudden noise and presence of so many people seemed to overwhelm her.

She immediately stiffened, her eyes wide with fear.

"It's alright," I murmured.

"They're just curious. But I'll ask them to give you some space, okay?"

I heard a knock.

The door opened, and the kids' excited chatter ceased as they saw how the girl was.

She even started to hide behind me, she brought her knees to her face.

Andrea and Bella seemed to understand, and they stepped back, their expressions a mix of curiosity and concern.

But Gabriel lingered, his eyes fixed on the girl beside me.

He hesitated but came in. The girl's eyes were still wide and protective.

"Hello Mammy," he said looking back at me with a smile.

"Hello Gabriel, how was the tour?" I asked returning the smile.

"It's nice, Dad had to go to work but he dropped us here" he explained.

I nodded.

His attention went back to the girl then back to me.

"Who's that?" he asked curiously.

I had completely forgotten that Gabriel hadn't seen the girl. She's usually only out of her room when Luca is out.

And when Luca is out, Gabriel is out.

"She's a new friend" I looked at her.

"What's her name?" he asked.

"She doesn't talk so I don't know, she hasn't told me" I explained.

"Can I say hi?" he asked.

"Um, ok" I replied.

He walked around the bed to where the girl was.

She protectively shifted more to my direction but Gabriel didn't look discouraged.

"Hey," he began, his voice soft and kind.

"I haven't seen you before but believe me, you don't need to be scared. This is a nice place, and Mammy is amazing. If you ever feel braver, we have a cool jungle gym outside, and you can play with us on the slide one day, it's really fun. We can also make cookies. and do fun things. I'm Gabriel."
