Ever since I joined the Ducks during the Junior Goodwill Games, Charlie and I have been really close. We clicked so fast that we became instant best friends - even when the new Ducks and the old Ducks seemed to be at war. Despite the fact that they had already been good friends and teammates with another girl for years, they couldn't help but tease us for our closeness - and it didn't take long. Some of them have been much worse than others. It's been years since then, and the behaviour remains the same.

It can get pretty uncomfortable at times - especially in the early days when we were all still getting to know each other. We distanced ourselves from each other but found our way back by the end of the tournament. All these years later, it's something we've come to expect - but it can still occasionally get under our skin. We've learned to deal with it. We've all grown closer, but it's like nothing changed. However, there is one thing that has...

Unbeknownst to the majority of the team, Charlie and I have been dating since we started at Eden Hall (which was nearly 3 years ago). Both of us were scared to make a move at first. We were worried it might damage our friendship and nervous about how the team would ramp up the teasing. Nevertheless, it got blurted out during a sleepover and we tried to figure out a way to keep it secret. After basically 3 years, I'd say we're doing a good job. We've only told a couple of the others - or should I say the other couples.

Trying to keep it to ourselves for so long gets difficult at times - it's just human nature. We're close and touchy anyway, so I guess that makes it a little easier. However, there have been many times we've found ourselves holding hands under the lunch table or at the back of our English class - and sneaking kisses in corridors when the Ducks aren't around.

Life has been hectic ever since the original Ducks actually got good at hockey. Even in the summers, it's been non-stop. However, after countless years, we finally have a break that lasts an entire summer. Believe me when I say that we're reveling in our time off.

Jan needed someone to watch the store for a few hours and asked if Charlie and I would mind filling in. We've been helping out around here for so long that he trusts us and knows that we know what we're doing. Obviously, we agreed. Besides, it's always a slow day anyway. The lack of customers means Charlie and I finally get some alone time where we don't feel exhausted from the start.

"Quit sharpening skates and come talk to me!" I yell over the noisy machine as I sit few feet away.

"This is the last pair, I promise." He glances over at me with a chuckle before taking a few more strokes. "There, all done!" He announces as he carefully sets aside the pair of skates he was just working on and walks towards me.

"Finally!" I celebrate. "I was starting to get a headache."

"Oh, well, I can fix that." He claims on the verge of being smug before bending down and kissing my temple.

"That was awful." I playfully recoil.

"Ouch." He clutches his non-existent pearls. "I'll blame the meanness on your headache. Come on."

Charlie extends his arm and practically drags me away when I latch on. Fits of giggles as we flail into the kitchen to grab our lunch and drinks from the fridge. Sitting together on the couch we used to talk to Hans on, we talk about plans for the future between bites - mostly the Ducks/Wild game we're going to together next week.

"I'm so excited!" I exclaim as I wipe my mouth. "Do you think the others will be watching on TV?"

"Home team against the team named after us? Yeah, I think they'll be watching." Charlie chuckles.
