Appearance/Info

His real name is William Dwight, and all we have about his former appearance is that he's 6'2. Not much is given on his youth other than his mother dying in a car accident when he was 14, leaving him with only his father. His father seemed supportive so his overall home life was alright other than his mother's untimely death.

He grew up wanting to be a chess player, he began practicing at age 7 and won the very first game he played. He was a bit quiet but he did have one friend named Garret who played chess as well, which they bonded over. As they grew only Chess retained his interest in chess. The boys fought a lot but always made up in the end. At age 19 he and Garret ended their friendship for good after Garret insulted Chess to look good in front of a girl. Chess received a call from him later in which he apologized and asked to meet at the park to talk it out. Chess went but others were there, it was a set up. They beat Chess to unconsciousness which is when an entity presented themselves to him. They spoke and said he didn't need any friends since he had chess, and they also offered him revenge which he accepted without a second thought.

When he awoke he randomly got a sword and killed his father for some reason. The story then ends with him going after his next target, Garret. After making the deal with the entity he has half black and half white skin as you can see in the chapter picture. The black skin is actually burnt but it doesn't look like it.

Traits

Before making a deal with the entity he wasn't described much other than having a complete love for chess and only a single friend. It can be assumed that he was introverted and a bit of an outcast.

Afterward, the only thing known about him is that he has a desire for revenge and seems merciless in who he kills. His father isn't stated to have been abusive or unpleasant so his murder at Chess' hands seems completely unnecessary. It's possible he was only killed so Chess could disappear without a trace after killing Garret and everyone else involved in beating him.

Motive

Aside from revenge, I believe eliminating any ties to his past life could be a motive.

Method

This isn't really detailed, so who knows?

Weapon(s)

A random sword. It's not mentioned until he's killing his father so I don't know if he found it or had it in his possession beforehand.

Theories

The entity he made a deal with is unknown, we don't know if it was a demon or some other type of spirit. Personally I view the entity as a demon and find it likely he was granted powers of some sort in order to fulfil his goal. So despite not being said to have any supernatural abilities, I think he probably would have at least one.

I also think this entity could have impacted his personality and drawn out his negative qualities, burying the good ones. In order to get revenge he'd need to be able to kill without guilt, so I think it's possible the entity squashed all of his positive traits. This could explain his father's murder.

Maybe the entity took his love for chess to another level. After his transformation his appearance is tied heavily to chess, so I find it likely the entity twisted his emotions to where he's only capable of thinking in terms of chess. Rather than using morality in his judgements, he uses logic. Everything is a game to him. He weighs pros and cons and sees people as pawns, his humanity being either buried or completely taken away to help him achieve his own ends.

As for why the entity reached out in the first place, idk. Maybe they wanted a human vessel to kill people for them so they could take their souls or something. It's never really mentioned.

Chess master turned into a power ranger, conFiRmEd. Nah but I also feel like the entity is a demon, for sure. To me the entity definitely took advantage of Williams liking for chess, and turned it into his own little game. Maybe the Demon is using willam as a power source, who knows. I definitely feel like it's some sort of possessing or continual influence, just so the demon grows in power. Arks theory is better though lmao. She explained what I'm thinking more thoroughly. - Brinlee
