Chapter 69

2 years later

JJ's POV

Emily and I now have a 7 year old, if you were to meet her on the street you would never know that she has had a bad upbringing, Mara is the sweetest kid ever

Now that she is older she still doesn't like when we leave for work but she does allow Penelope to take her back to her own apartment

Mara has also been in school for the past two years and loves it! She was behind a little when she first started but it didn't take her long to catch up,

While I wasn't too keen on the idea of private school at first I'm glad we went with that option, Mara likes it and she has made friends.

In other news, Maya and I have gotten pretty close over the past two years and she will usually text me about something big during a call just as I do her,

Emily and Carina seem to hit it off, the two of them thinks it's so hilarious to speak Italian around Maya and I

Emily was also persistent that Mara start learning a second language once she was caught up and doing well in school, I didn't want to pressure her so, we are waiting a little longer, maybe next year or later this year

My mom on the other hand, well we don't talk to her. Ever since the last meeting with Maya I haven't been back and she has never tried to contact me which I am thankful for.

Today is Thursday and Emily and I just got back from a case and Mara is in school.

It's just after lunch so we have a few hours until we can go get our baby.

"Hey, you all want to come over for dinner?" Emily ask the team, and they all agree

"Get your paperwork done and go home" Hotch tells us all and he goes to his office

"I'm going to head up to my office" I tell Emily and kiss her

"Hey! No PDA in the office" Derek says and Emily flips him off and kisses me again

"I can sue!" He exclaims and I shake my head

Once in my office I stayed busy until 2:30 when Emily and I left so we would be at the school to get Mara

Mara came out to us smiling and got in the back seat

"You're back! You were gone for so long" she tells us, it was one of our longer cases

"You got it babes?" Emily ask her when she seen Mara struggling a little with the seat belt

"Got it" Mara smiles

"How was school ladybug?" I ask her and we start driving home

"It was good, someone in my class had a birthday so we got cupcakes!" She smiles happily

"Can I take cupcakes for my birthday?" She ask and I smile

"Well since your birthday was last month, next year yes we can make cupcakes" I tell her and she smiles and looks out the window contently

When we got home Mara took her book bag to her room and came back out to me

"are you hungry? You want a snack?" I ask her and she shakes her head

Unfortunately when she started school a little bit of her anxiety with food came back, some days she wouldn't eat lunch at school

That last about 2 months and she was good to go. But even if it has been years most of the time she still won't tell us if she is hungry,

That is the only thing we still have trouble with, no matter how many times we assure her, she is getting better with it, just slowly
