Ever since you'd met Bucky Barnes, you'd been trying to be friends with him. It was difficult at first because he didn't really trust you or himself, but soon enough, you could have a normal conversation and occasionally you'd see an almost smile flicker on his face. Something drew you to the quiet soldier, something that made your heart flutter and your smile appear more often. There was one thing, however, that was bothering you- Bucky had never met your gaze in all this time. One day, you summoned up the nerve to ask, and it took him a long moment to reply.
"I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend you-"
"... It's because I'm afraid I'll see hate or disgust in your eyes."
That nearly broke your heart, so you gently took his chin and raised it up, forcing him to meet your gaze. All Bucky could see was warmth, compassion, caring, and affection. His heart soared with hope and he smiled softly at you for the first time.
