I have prepared a map of Saipan Island at the time of the landing operation. I hope you will find it useful.

Saipan Island: near San Roque

A strange stench filled the air. A thousand corpses drifted by in a million winds.

Having repulsed their scouting party several times in unorthodox ways, they assumed that the enemy would be wary and not go on the offensive. These expectations were easily betrayed when the US Marines of this era gathered at San Roque and surged in like a torrent, a large force the size of a single regiment, backed by some 50 tanks. Of course, the small waves were no match for the breakwater that was the Self-Defense Forces, and they were crushed in the blink of an eye.

"Hngg..."

First Lieutenant Onoda, who witnessed the battle as a platoon leader of the Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade, frowned as hard as he could. Looking around, he saw a promising and naïve warrior, still in his teens, gaping. Onoda walked over to him and rubbed his shoulder. The only sight more miserable than victory is defeat. He remembered there was a saying that goes something like that, but that's exactly the situation.

"It's just like that anime they used to make," a platoon sergeant muttered.

"I have a DVD of it myself."

"The one where the SDF fight in a fantasy world, right?"

"Yeah."

"Sure thing..."

Onoda recalled the time when he was in junior high or high school. The one that the sergeant was talking about is a series where they fought in a different world beyond the gate that opened to Ginza. At the beginning of the series, there is a scene in which the SDF trounced an army armed with swords and spears, and a scene not much different from that was unfolding before his eyes.

'Though the opponent was not a medieval army, but the United States Marines during the Second World War...'

He recalled talking with a colleague about how they outmatched them and that they were okay because they have anti-tank missiles. In fact, they were not only okay, but invincible. They pulverized the M4s along with its accompanying infantry and turned Amtracs into coffins as they moved. The infantrymen were hit by shrapnel bursting over their heads in droves, and even if they survived, they will be targeted by rockets and guns from attack helicopters. In addition, at their feet were detonated Claymore mines.

The platoon led by Onoda had not even fired a single shot.

"But maybe it was a good thing."

"Why is it, sir?"

"I mean, platoon leader, what if we had been in this situation?"

"In that case, I would be the first corpse to grow grass."
