Nago City, Okinawa Prefecture: Camp Schwab

The newly formed 1st Battalion of the Provisional Vietnamese People's Army was training in an area that was originally a golf course. At the time of the time-space cataclysm, there were approximately 300.000 Vietnamese residents in the country. The Provisional Government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, which had been in charge of protecting them, had created a ground force under the command of a military officer on duty who had been selected from among them and promoted to a general. The Japanese government had announced that it was forming a "United Nations Force," and the purpose was to provide troops for this force. Of course, junior enlisted personnel are scarce, so those who are deemed useful are being promoted to sergeants at the drop of a hat.

'Even so... this is like the army of a puppet government,' Lê Minh, who was abruptly appointed as a political commissar, thought as he looked at the eagerly crawling soldiers.

In fact, they looked like South Vietnamese. The Self-Defense Forces' base has been filled with more than a million recruits, but he never thought that he would be renting a room on the site of an American military base in Japan, of all places.

But this world's Vietnam was said to be ruled by Emperor Bảo Đại, and frankly, he didn't know why. According to the provisional government, the situation will be adjusted after the war is over, and this may be a way to secure political power. However, he heard that the terrible famine is coming to an end due to the restoration of distribution, which was something he welcomed with open arms.

"Hmm... things are moving better than they were before..." Major Chien Hồng, the battalion commander, commented. He's a military man in his own right, and was caught in the middle of his honeymoon. "If it were my unit, we'd all be flunked, but we're not."

"I think they're growing up fast," Lê Minh quickly responded. "I can't imagine how they were so soulless in the beginning."

"In times like this, it's better to have something to do."

"You're right, sir."

His words were filled with a sense of realization and some sadness. If he was doing something, he could avoid thinking about the harsh reality of being cut off from his family and hometown while he was trying to overcome the challenges before him. Right now, that was life-and-death important.

"Oh, and... something like this came out."

Chien Hồng reached for his smartphone and played a video. What was it, he thought, but it showed a chicken. The location was some facility. They were being taken out of their baskets, clucking noisily and running around energetically. The only thing to notice was that their legs were very thick.

"Are they Đông Tảo chicken?"

"Yes. I ate it once, it's quite expensive, but it's very tasty."

"Then I'd like to taste it myself."

"It will arrive next weekend."

Lê Minh's eyes widened at these unexpected words. What on earth does this mean? On second thought, the facility looked like a quarantine station or something.

"It seems that the ship that brought rice and clothes to Hà Nội got them as souvenirs."

"How strange."

"After all that happened, it came back to us. Let's eat it together. Well, maybe one slice per person, but it's a little feast."

"I'd like to make plans right away."

Lê Minh's expression contorted as he spoke.

There is work to be done, and then there will be a feast. Such a simple thing made him happier than anything else right now.
