"Milk and sugar?" I asked him.

"Yeah," he replied. "Sorry I didn't say so before."

"No offense taken. I figured you didn't like cream with your coffee when you only drank half the cup the last 7 times."

The cafe was to be opened in 30 minutes and I thought we needed to spend time together for starters.

"So, how is Luke doing?" I asked sitting across the table from him.

"He's been better actually," he said taking a sip of his coffee. "No attacks recently and he's calmer too."

"How are you?" I asked looking straight at him.

"Okay," he replied. "Could be better but, okay is good for now." He did look better. He even smiled more often.

"Would you like to go out with me tomorrow night?" I asked letting the thoughts in my head spill out.

"Sure, where are we going?" His answer took me by surprise since I wasn't prepared for him to say yes.

"Uh-it's a surprise," I said so quickly it made him laugh lightly but heartily.

"Thank you, Donna," he said.

"Oh, what for?"

"Coffee, talking and everything," he said holding my gaze.

"Well, it's a start," I said daringly hoping for so much more.

"Yes, it is."

He took my hand in his and for the first time, my heart slipped to my shoes, in a warm feeling kind of way.
