Chapter 27

January 11, Sunday

Maeva's POV

Lives get lost. Lives get lost everyday. Actually, around eight thousand people die per day on average. Never in my life have I actually thought it would happen to someone close to me. I never worried about that slight possibility. I never worried about what I might have to do once someone loses a person close to them.

That's probably why Kathrin was not here right now, at her mother's funeral. Instead she was elsewhere, doing god knows what. She might've be hurt, or worse.

You see, this was the thing about Kathrin, she doesn't show her emotions, and pretends like they don't exist. As much as she doesn't want other people to know, she does have them. And the thought of someone knowing about her ability to cry, knowing that they can use it against her, embarrass her, that scares her.

She has always been the 'strong' friend, and thought crying was 'weak'. Even though we remind her a lot that it isn't, she doesn't believe so. So she ran away.

"Where's Kathrin! She can't miss Ms. Anderson's funeral." Sienna, who was currently standing next to me, hissed.

Kathrin's mom was actually quite popular, well in the group of parents. 'Michigan Academy' has been going on for quite a long time, she's got a lot of friends from there. Shockingly though, she didn't want any of them here, at least that what she requested before... it happened. Only mine, Sienna's, Nate's and her family. And her family only included Kathrin and Mr. Anderson, at least from what I know of.

"I don't know, ok? She's been gone since the day Mrs. Anderson passed!" I exclaimed, feeling tears welling up in my eyes from worry, fighting the verge to cry, which both Sienna and I have both been doing a lot quite recently.

"I'm sorry, I-- I'm just... anxious." I replied. "It's fine." I saw one tear roll down the black haired girl's cheek. I wrapped my arm around her shoulder, soothingly stroking her left arm.

When the time had arrived, Mr. Anderson walked up to the front and stood there. We were stood at a graveyard, him ready to give his eulogy.  His dark eyes, which looked exactly like Kathrins', scanned the place, locating Nate's family at the very back. Then my mom, who was standing next to Sienna's parents. Then there was the black haired girl and I. Right next to me to my right was an empty spot, which I hope would soon be filled.

"H-- hello. Thank you for coming." Kathrin's dad started saying, and held his own hand. He then looked down, possibly trying to hide his need to cry. Kathrin told us he has always been the type of person to show no emotion, that's why Kathrin acts how she acts. Right after, Mr. Anderson looked up. He opened his mouth, but no words came out, as if there was a lump in his throat.

His eyes turn glossy and were glowing under the sunlight from tears. Those same pair of eyes shifted from sadness to shock, staring straight at the very back, directly opposite to where he was standing. That led to all of us turning around as well. My eyes widened, spotting who it was, but then I broke into a smile, glad that Kathrin could make it.
