The audition is over.

In a meeting room, the lights are dimmed, and the projector is showing a video on the screen, in which a young man is acting.

Perhaps he is already used to the camera. His gestures and tones are quite natural. There is almost nothing he’d done wrong. If an instructor from a performing school were to give it a mark, it would definitely be over 90.

There is nothing to deduct points for.

The problem – there is nothing to add points for either.

The director stops the playback with a remote, and looks back at his team, “he’s the last one?”

He does not sound satisfied for sure.

Since there were too many people signing up, the screening was divided into several sessions.

The team was divided into several to screen the interviewees simultaneously. Then, the assistant directors, with the help of the others, looked all the recordings over once, before choosing a set of candidates to present to the director for a final decision.

That young man in the video just now was the last of the candidates.

The other side characters have long been decided on, except the antagonist whose screen time rivals that of the protagonist. No one suitable enough has shown up yet.

The director has always been strict. The team, hearing that, doesn’t reply at all.

Then, one of the assistant directors steeled his guts and asks, “director Wang, that was really the last one. Was he no good either?”

“No good, definitely no good!” Director Wang put the remote down so forcefully that even the table shakes slightly.

“What shallow acting. The character is someone deep and restrained. He does not show his anger by yelling and screaming.”

The team also understands what the director demanded. He wants someone whose acting and emotional response are fully under control, which is a tall order for fresh actors.

Someone suggests, “maybe we should just look for experienced actors. They’ll be able to handle it alright.”

Director Wang goes quiet.

Rather than a protagonist and an antagonist, the movie could be said to have dual protagonists. If possible, he still wants to discover new talent.

The protagonist’s character is easy. As long as the person looks the part and doesn’t cower in front of the camera then he’s confident he can lead them along.

Not for the antagonist who suppresses his emotions. The antagonist needs to act using his eyes and subtle changes to his expression.

If no young actor turned out suitable, then he can only change the script and character setting, making the antagonist much older, basically.

He ponders for a bit before saying, “hand me the CVs.”

The assistant then carries along a box of CVs, which includes everyone that passed the initial selection.
