Chapter sixty-three: "Silently"

"Are you sure that my Dad didn't say anything I mean to you? Because from the looks of it I could see him judging you from afar" Cloud tilted his head slightly to the direction where his father was seated next to Sophia

No matter how much of a jerk Theo was, it was very obvious that he was a gentleman to his wife. Sophia laughed at a cracked joke by a person at their table and Theo's eyes just kept admiring her
Too bad that facade is only for her and Sophia wouldn't let it get into her head

I smiled and looked up at him "Don't be such a worry wart, it's our cousin's wedding so don't be too stressed about it"

He didn't seem too convinced by my persuasion and kept a sharp eye on all the people in the ballroom, especially his aunts and uncles

While drinking punch with Cloud, Ava walked up to me and hooked her arms with mine "Come, I wanna introduce you to the family"

Cloud snorted "Isn't that my job Granny?"

Ava narrowed her eyes on her grandson "Yeah, you're doing a bad job" she then started pulling me to another side of the ballroom where the Marshall clan are all gathered

Cloud tried to protest with Ava but the grandma already has her mind set on introducing me
This damn ballroom is like fucking battlefield, it's hard to give back backhanded words to people especially rude ones

I was brought to a large table and most of them went silent when they saw the head of the family bring me to the table. Their eyes started to look at me up and down like my existence was for them to judge, it felt uncomfortable

"Who is she?" a woman with blonde hair and silver eyes ask Ava as she sets down her wine glass

"This is Penelope, go ahead and say hello dear"

I nodded a little to Ava "Hi"

Cloud managed to catch up with us and was right now behind me doing his best to at least comfort me with his presence, the aunts and uncle were careful with their actions

I could easily tell from their body language that the urge to criticize me is starting to come out of their mouths but since the head of the clan was right beside and supporting me, then they need to keep themselves in check

Three empty chairs were luckily next to one another so we three took a seat and there starts the mental battlefield
There is just something different about silently criticizing someone and saying their feelings out loud for me to hear

A man with a head full of grey hair and a mustache asked me "Have you met Theo yet?"

I nodded my head and grinned like a broken robot would do in this useless chat "I did, he was so polite"
Well that was the biggest lie yet

Cloud was the only one who could distinguish my sarcasm and genuine words so when he heard me say it his lips were trying hard not to smile from how he was struggling to snort

"How did you two meet?" the blonde lady asked and Cloud decided to answer for me

"We met since we were kids Aunt Claire"
There it is, the lovable golden child facade is back again

Everybody's mood has lifted once Cloud soon joined in on the conversation, for once I could see him lead the adult conversation as an 18-year-old with my own eyes. He was able to garner a lot of support from his relatives for accepting me as his girlfriend

The aunts and uncles were in deep thought if what he said about me was true so the woman who was Aunt Claire as Cloud calls her, decided to shake my hand "Welcome to the family Penelope"
