It’s the gamble, it's the bluff, it's the risk -- but mostly it's the potential lie -- that creates the rush. I call it a rush because when it's on me, other life is a blur and I am immortal, powerful, and in an element that doesn't exist for anyone else. I read the flicker of the eye, the stroke of the thumb on cards, and the way the tongue runs over teeth in contemplation. Then there's the sudden voices demanding different cards or declining them. The bets -- the heady spinning -- are placed, and then the verdict is passed. Did I win?
