287. Scary Monsters: Write about a scary (or not-so-scary) monster in your closet or under the bed.
Thump.
Something moved under her bed. She knew it. Outside a car passed by, and their headlights threw her window blinds into relief on the wall. In the illumination, the room seemed much more sinister than in the day. She clutched her stuffed animal closer to her, burrowed her face in its fur, and pulled the covers over both of their heads.
Thump.
It came from right below her. There was something there, there was something there, there was something there...
Thump.
She shut her eyes tighter, curled up into a small ball of fear.
It seemed like an hour passed, but time doesn't move the same when you're scared. It pulses quickly or it drags slowly. Sometimes it does both at once.
She couldn't sleep being terrified. No noises came from under her. Slowly, trying to tell herself monsters weren't real, she slid out of bed and peered under it.
Bright yellow eyes stared at her.
Shrieking "Mommy!" the girl sprinted out of her room.
Beneath the bed, the family cat blinked its luminous eyes, then settled its head back onto its paws for sleep.
