Peter knew what Tony Stark was doing in his apartment the moment he saw him.

He also knew his answer.

No.

"No," he said as soon as Mr. Stark had closed the bedroom door behind them.

Tony stood at the end of his room, crossing his arms over his chest. He huffed, his black eye wincing before he rubbed a spot on his forehead.

"That easy, huh?" he asked, stress clear in his voice.

"Yes," he said. "Yes - s-sir. I'm sorry, but - I'm not who you think I am."

"You're not?" He lifted his eyebrows, unconvinced.

"No, sir," he answered.

Tony sighed. He held up his phone and turned it on. A holographic image of a boy in a red suit swinging and stopping a bus played. "So this isn't you?"

"Wha- no," Peter lied. "No. No way."

"No? Oh," he said, clearly not buying a word of it. "So if I was to, say, recruit this hero for a super special secret mission, they - whoever they are - and certainly not you - would say no?"

"I-I don't know," he said. "But y-yeah, no, uh, that's not me-"

At the same time Peter spoke, Tony reached up and tugged the thin rope hanging from his ceiling. A flash of red and blue clothing fell before Peter lunged for it, stuffing it into his closet as quickly as possible.

He turned away from the closet and scratched the top of his head awkwardly, ignoring the pound of blood in his ears as his cheeks threatened to flame in embarrassment.

"So not you, then?" Tony asked.

Peter pursed his lips, but didn't utter a word.

He sighed and plopped down onto the twin bed. "Right here, right now, I put the offer out. I don't want to chase you down, but I know you see it. You run with me, and I can cut you free out of the drudgery and walls you keep in."

Peter blinked at him.

"So trade that typical for something colorful, and if it's crazy, live a little crazy. You can play it sensible, a king of conventional, or you can risk it all and see." He held out his arms in invitation and smirked, seeing the flash of wonder in Peter's eyes.

"Don't you wanna get away from the same old part you gotta play?" he asked. "'Cause I got what you need so come with me and take the ride, it'll take you to the other side. 'Cause you can do like you do, or you can do like me. Stay in the cage, or you'll finally take the key. Oh, yeah! Suddenly you're free to fly - it'll take you to the other side."

Peter threw his hands up and crossed the room. "Okay, my friend, you want to cut me in. Well I hate to tell you, but it just won't happen. So thanks, but no, I think I'm good to go. 'Cause I quite enjoy the life you say I'm trapped in."

He pointed to him. "Now I admire you, and that whole show you do. You're onto something, really it's something - but I get along pretty well, and don't want that hero stuff to sell - I'll have to leave that up to you."

Tony rolled his eyes. Peter sighed and dropped his arms.

"Don't you know that I'm okay with this uptown part I get to play? 'Cause I got what I need and I don't want to take the ride - I don't need to see the other side. So go and do like you do, I'm good to do like me. Ain't in a cage, so I don't need to take the key. Oh, yeah, Can't you see I'm doing fine? I don't need to see the other side."

Tony stood up and gestured around. "Now is this really how you like to spend your days? High school and misery, and computers, no play?"

He blinked, a smile playing on his lips. "If I were mixed up with you, I'd be the talk of Midtown - probably graced and totally cool, but Aunt May-"

"But you would finally live a little, finally laugh a little - just let me give you the freedom to dream and it'll wake you up and cure your aching, take your walls and start 'em breaking - now that's a deal that seems worth taking!" He sighed and leaned back, crossing his legs. "But I guess I'll leave that up to you..."

Peter thought for a moment. He thought of May, he thought of how hard it had been since they had lost Ben. He thought of how she had smiled today - so proud of her smart nephew that her husband was so grateful for.

He wanted to do anything to keep her smiling like that.

"Well it's intriguing, but to go would cost me greatly," he said, trying to sound very grown up about the decision, "so what percentage of credits would I be taking?"

Tony nodded. "Fair enough, you'd want a piece of all the action. I'd give you entrance to any college you want, we can shake and make it happen."

Peter shook his head. He sounded much braver than he felt. "I wasn't born this morning, I can get into anywhere just fine," he said.

"Why not go ahead and brag a little," he said sarcastically, "you and your twin bed and dumpster computers just scream brilliance and luxury."

"I need credits," he said.

"Maybe some," Tony said, but mostly to mess with the kid.

Because he gave up too easily. "Fine," he said. "What's the job?"

Tony grinned. "Kid, you ever been to Berlin?"

...

Don't you wanna get away to a whole new part you're gonna play

Peter had never been on a plane before, and he'd never seen a real Avenger in person before.

'Cause I got what you need, so come with me and take the ride
To the other side

And now he was on one of Mr. Stark's planes with Happy Hogan, hundreds of feet in the air, travelling out of New York for the first time.

So if you do like I do
So if you do like me
Forget the cage, 'cause we know how to make the key

But nothing was more exciting than getting his brand new suit (which probably cost a billion dollars) from Tony Stark and then going to a freaking battlefield -

Oh, yeah! Suddenly we're free to fly
We're going to the other side

"Underoos!" Tony yelled.

Peter dropped his phone and flipped onto the middle of the soon-to-be fight. He shot a web and stole Captain America's shield.

So if you do like I do
To the other side
So if you do like me

"'Sup, guys?"

We're going to the other side
'Cause if we do we're going to the other side
We're going to the other side

And then the white eyes of his new mask raked across the line of Avengers, on Cap's side, and then on Tony's, and his heart stopped at the smallest and probably youngest on either side of the team.

You.
