Poisoning the Well

After her interview Kai's life had returned to normal. The issue turned to be not a spy, but an ancient transmitter housed in a necklace the Wraith had planted among the Athosians. Teyla had inadvertently been luring them to their missions sites all along. Major Sheppard ended up using it to lay a trap and captured a live Wraith. Kai had been brought the transmitter afterwards for deactivation since she seemed now to be the foremost expert in Wraith tech on Atlantis.

Zelenka had been called in on a new project that week, leaving Kai to continue work on the jumpers. She enjoyed the time by herself. While others might find it lonely it was almost a relief to be able to work without keeping up the pretense of the lie she had told. Other than Major Sheppard taking out the jumper no one came to the jumper bay, and his team had been off world for several days. The only other times she saw anyone was in the mess hall.

She was just cleaning out the air filter in one of the non-operational pods when she heard the doors hiss open.

"Kai?" Weir's voice echoed through the quiet bay.

Kai pulled herself out from under the pod. "I'm up here," she called down from the third level of jumper storage. "I'll be right down," she said moving towards the maintenance ladder.

Weir was waiting for her when she climbed down. "Kai," she greeted briskly. "How are you?"

Kai could tell there was something on Doctor Weir's mind. There would have to be for her to come all the way up here to see her instead of just radioing. Kai scrubbed her greasy hands off on the jumpsuit she wore.

"Well. What can I do for you Doctor Weir?" She asked pleasantly.

"We have received word from the team on Hoff. Doctor Beckett seems to believe this drug is something that is perhaps viable. He has asked that we send equipment to assist the research. It will take two jumpers to move the necessary equipment and man power. Major Sheppard is returning with Jumper Two for the first load. While I'm told Sergeant Markham is gaining proficiency with flying I would like to ask you to pilot the second jumper with Sergeant Bates team to bring the necessary items to Hoff."

Kai nodded. "Of course," she had piloted the jumper on Sergeant Bates last two off-world missions. She had seen only the beginnings and endings of Sergeant Markham's flying lessons with the Major and she was fairly certain it would be better for everyone involved if she flew.

"Good, thank you, We expect Major Sheppard to return within the hour to begin loading the Jumpers." Weir said.

Kai nodded. "I'll go get my gear," she said and headed back to her room. She hung her jumpsuit on the hook and pulled on the charcoal slacks and charcoal and purple jacket they had given her. She pulled her hair back in a low pony tail and tied her scarf around her neck in an intricate knot, tucking the ends inside her jacket. She preferred her own gear but she also recognized it was important to look like she was one of the team, especially going off-world.

When she returned to the jumper bay it was bustling with marines who were finishing loading up the necessary gear. She climbed into Jumper Three. She powered it up and began making final adjustments as the last of the marines climbed aboard.

Sergeant Bates took the co-pilots chair. "We're ready," he reported briskly.

"Jumper Three this is Jumper Two," Sheppard's voice came through her ear piece.

"This is Jumper Three, go ahead Major."

"Everybody buckled up back there?" he asked.

She glanced over her shoulder, noting everyone was seated. "Yes Major," she responded seriously.
