You knocked twice on the door, careful to knock with the right amount of vigour and intensity.

"Come in." Captain Holt called out from inside his office and gestured for you to take a seat. "Officer Y/S/N, what can I do for you today?"

"I need a few days off next week, I know it's short notice and I'm really sorry but it's an emergency."

"I see. Of course, you are under no obligation to tell me, but may I inquire to what an extent of an 'emergency' this emergency is? I hate to ask but with Jake still undercover and Terry stuck at home with two sick children and a sick wife we really don't have much manpower to spare."

"I need to take a few days to go and visit my parents, they're a few states over otherwise I would just take the weekend."

"I'm sorry y/n, but I don't classify a family visit as an 'emergency' dire enough for us to spare you. Were already up to our knees in unsolved cases, metaphorically of course my god, can you even imagine if we were literally up to our knees in paperwork, even worse if we were up to Terry's knees, that would be double the amount of paperwork as Boyle's..." For a split second he seemed to forget where he was and spaced out.

"Captain?"

"Oh yes sorry, I just lost myself in the comedy of metaphors. I can't approve your time, unless there was some other part to this emergency that you weren't telling me about."

"This is the last time I'm going to be able to see my parents before they travel, and I need to take the time to tell them that I'm... gay."

"Well honestly that wasn't the shock reveal that you expected it to be and besides Officer Y/S/N, do you really expect me to authorize annual leave with one week notice during our busiest season when we are already understaffed?"

"No Sir, I understand, don't worry about it."

"I just can't y/n. I can however authorise an all expenses paid visit to a conference being held that conveniently happens to be in the state where your parents currently live. Of course, this is purely to be taken for professional reasons and no personal matters may be handled during your stay. Okay? No personal matters." Captain Holt attempted to slyly wink but it was a very obvious manouver.

"Thank you Sir."

"No personal matters."

"I understand Sir, thank you."

"Officer Y/S/N... No... personal... matters."
