As your brain came back to, all you could hear was a continuous beeping, it was constant and regular, but god was it loud.

You felt a weight on your right hand but when you moved your fingers that weight disappeared and then the beeping sound was joined by a scraping sound.

Your eyes were the last thing you got control of – when you opened them, they were assaulted by harsh fluorescent lights which made you wince.

Whoever was in the room with you realised this and reached to turn the lights off.

When you went to thank them your throat was scratchy, your voice just couldn't get out and you had an overwhelming urge to try to cough up a lung.

At needing to cough you threw yourself into an upright position and in the middle of your coughing fit a hand presented a glass of water in front of you.

Gratefully you took it and you couldn't help but smile when you saw Jake was the one who had handed it to you.

Once the water was down your throat you finally managed to speak.

"Why am I here?" you questioned but you winced at the scratchiness of your voice.

Jake sighed, refilling your water and handing it back. "You passed out Y/N," he informed you. "You got those kids out and then you just collapsed."

You nodded as you recalled the event. "The smoke must have gotten to me."

Jake laughed humourlessly. "You act as if this is a regular event."

"It kind of is," you admitted with a shrug. "I don't exactly seek it out but if it comes to it then I'd rather me be in the hospital than them."

He sighed again as he shook his head and you saw the concern across his face.

"I can't deny that having such a hot detective around doesn't help," you tried to joke as you reached for his hand.

Jake seemed grateful for the contact as he intertwined your fingers. "You don't seem surprised that I'm here."

"Call it optimism," you stated. "I'd hoped there was more to this than just the odd flirting in the meetings."

He smiled and nodded in confirmation. "Yeah...yeah there is."

"So, does that mean we can grab a cup of coffee when I get out of here?" you asked as you smiled at the feeling of his thumb rubbing over the back of your hand.

"Only if you promise not to run into any more burning buildings," he joked with a smirk on his face.

You laughed. "That was kind of in my job description Peralta."

"Then I guess you need me around to catch you just in case."

Squeezing his hand, you shot him a smile. "You can catch me any day."
