day 24

Eli had spoken to (Y/n) since pulling her in the water. He'd actually said sorry, something he hadn't done for a very long time. She assured him that it was fine but he could tell she felt some bitterness towards him.

This aggravated Eli for several reasons. The first was that he wanted her to be honest with him instead of pretending she was okay, secondly he felt entitled to her forgiveness- he didn't know she'd react like that! And finally his own irritation towards himself.

He felt he could only forgive himself once (Y/n) had.

Why did he do something so idiotic? Sure, they were messing around but she asked him to stop and he didn't. Eli knew that he should take responsibility for it but that had never been his style.

Long ago he was such a nice kid but then he got ruined and never really recovered as most would.

"Elliot!"

Both father and son looked up to Harriet Barber simultaneously.

The older man chuckled to himself and ruffled up his son's dark hair. "Oh, the struggles of naming your child after yourself."

"I told you it was a bad idea... Aside from coming off as a total narcissist." Harriet sighed, looking at her husband and son. Elliot Barber and Elliot Barber Jr.

"It's a good name, son." Harriet's husband told his four year old child.

"I was asking for your father, Elliot, so you're not to worry. Will you go up for bedtime?" Harriet smiled sweetly to her son but he wasn't old enough to see how fake she was being.

He smiled back at his parents and then went up to his room. He was sent up there early often but not because of his own misbehaviour.

It started almost as soon as his door shut. The shouting. He wondered if they knew he could hear them.

He could never make out any of the words but he could easily detect all the anger behind them, it was difficult to listen to so he put his hands over his ears.

After around ten minutes, his father came in.

"Alright, buddy?" He asked weakly.

Elliot removed his hands from his ears to look at his dad. "Why do you yell so much?"

The senior Barber rubbed the nape of his neck nervously. "I'm sorry you had to hear that, me and mommy just got a bit upset but everything's okay now."

"Promise?"

"Promise." His dad wanted to change the subject, talking about it with Harriet was bad enough. "You still reading that book... You know, the one about space?"

Elliot lit up and nodded happily. "Yeah! It's so cool!"

"Space is super cool, huh? I remember grandpa got me a telescope for my birthday one year." The father went to sit on the edge of Elliot's bed. "I used to look at the stars and I wanted to be an astronaut."
