day 49

Everyone had dinner together that evening with the males in the house eagerly looking forward to seeing (Y/n) after an entire day without her.

(Y/n) noted how quiet Max had been throughout the meal and then when she tried to talk to him afterwards he did all but completely ignore her.

She had been taken aback at first and wanted to see what was wrong but then he was gone and Eli called her over.

"Yes?" (Y/n) said in response to Eli asking for her.

"How was your day? It was weird not seeing you around." He tried to sound disinterested but his genuine curiosity could be sensed a mile away.

"It was nice..." (Y/n) deliberately kept her answer short and vague to avoid saying 'your ex girlfriend stole my dead friend's nail polish and then painted my nails with it'. "It was weird not seeing you too."

The corner of Eli's lips turned upwards. She didn't outright say that she missed him but it was sort of implied. "Your nails look cool I guess."

(Y/n) took another glance at her hand. "Thanks, Dottie did them."

Eli visually bittered and (Y/n) suddenly felt bad for mentioning his ex. "How are things with you two? After you broke up?"

"Things are... Whatever, there's nothing there anymore." Eli hadn't really thought about Dottie outside of their scheming, his thoughts were far too consumed with (Y/n).

He wondered if she felt the same, even a little bit. They'd kissed after all, though that was one-sided. Eli didn't think he'd survive to learn that his feelings were unrequited, she had to love him too it wasn't an option for her not to.

"I feel like any relationship that starts in an environment like this is doomed." (Y/n) mused.

"Why would you say that?" Eli shot back at her defensively. 'She must be talking about those losers but not us...we...we're the exception.'

"We're constantly around each other, there's no breathing room. There's this constant fear and any relationship would have the Gamemaster trying to pull them apart for entertainment." She theorised.

"It's not a bad thing for a couple to be around each other." Eli said with a sneer, he knew that for him at least his ideal way to spend his life would be to be around (Y/n) at every given moment. "And a strong relationship wouldn't be spooked by the Gamemaster." Eli rolled his eyes. "I don't get why everyone is so scared of that guy."

(Y/n) laughed and shook her head. The sound of her laughter was like music to the ravenette's ears. "Seriously? He literally abducted all of us and he's spying on us constantly and he has the power to starve us out if he wants to."

"Bullshit."

"That's your entire argument??"

"There's nothing more that needs to be said." Eli smirked at her. "It's all a load of bullshit."

"I wouldn't tempt fate if I were you." (Y/n) warned with an air of light heartedness. She winced as a wave of tiredness hit her, reminding her of the time. "I should probably get to bed."

"I can walk you to your room... It's not like I'm doing anything else." Eli shoved his hands into his pockets to unsuccessfully convey nonchalance.

(Y/n) smiled and nodded, glad that she had Eli to help take her mind off Max if only for a few minutes.

Hana stayed up late in bed, waiting until gone midnight when she was sure everyone would be in their rooms.

She'd been doing this for the almost two weeks now and had gone unnoticed. Hana lifted a dressing gown, threw it over her pyjamas and ran a lazy hand through her white hair to get out some of the knots that had accumulated.
