School years meant new starts and harder education: everybody knew that, and everybody also knew that they would go back to see that everyone had changed drastically over the Summer. What hadn't changed at all, but Y/N had been hoping would, was her crush on none other than C/N. During the weeks of Summer, she had been ignoring her feelings, which was easy since she hadn't seen him at all.

Only, the second she laid eyes on him again in biology, she knew that the feelings had never left. She had been seated at the back of the classroom, and he was at the front. Everyone else was being told where to sit when she looked at him pulling items out of his bag. He turned around and his eyes locked with hers, the eye contact lingering for a few seconds on both ends before Y/N looked away.

Internally, she sighed. C/N wasn't an idiot, he would probably figure it out. Also, he was sat next to another girl of whom he was particularly friendly with. The jealous emotions inside of her were unmistakable, but she bared down and continued the lesson with occasional glances in his direction.

The next day, he wasn't in. It was rare that people weren't in on the second day, but as she learned the day after, he had sustained an injury and had spent the school hours sleeping at home.

The same day she learnt that, she learnt that she was also no longer sat next to him in chemistry. It was heart-crushing, but maybe partially a good thing. The longer she sat next to him, the closer she got to accidentally revealing her feelings.

In maths later that day, she was still sat in her old seat at the back with her friends, and remained with the perfect stance to gaze at her crush without him noticing (unless he turned around). C/N turned around a lot, though, as on the next table over at the back row were a couple of his friends. Every single time he seemed to catch her staring at him. She paid enough attention to him to hear a lot of his conversations, since he was a naturally loud talker.

"Look, the entire back row are prefects," he commented to the friend sat next to him, turning around. Once again, Y/N's eyes locked on to him. It was true, she was a prefect, and so were the friends either side of her. "I'm just saying you're all prefects!" he projected his voice slightly more, noticing that she was observing him.

She looked down at the badge on her tie and between her friends, despite the fact she knew that piece of information for fact already.

"I'm a prefect too," he continued, "I know I don't have a badge- I wasn't in yesterday." They had been given their prefect badges the day before during afternoon form time. She had known that he was a prefect already, too.

Giving him a half-smile, half-chuckle, Y/N couldn't help but feel her insides swirl at the thought of conversation with him.

"It's true!" he said, evidently having taken her smile as a disbelieving expression.

Maybe no longer sitting next to him in chemistry would be very bad.

Open evening was on the Thursday of the second week back, when all the last-year primary schoolers would visit and look around so their parents could decide if they wanted their kids to attend that secondary school. Prefects were required to help, and Y/N considered the event as an extra four hours of pining over C/N from a distance. They all were staying after school before it began, anyway, so she was incredibly excited.

First thing after school, Y/N and her friends headed down to the nearest supermarket in a herd, where they bought snacks to fuel them for the evening. It was a hot day, so she felt particularly sweaty when she got back to the school. C/N arrived sometime after, and sat down across the room with his friends.

Y/N glanced at him whenever she could.

Eventually, she made eye contact with one of the friends that she was well acquainted with, who waved at her. Taking the opportunity to head over, she greeted them and accepted their offers of snacks. Unfortunately, no opportunity for conversation with C/N arose.

When the evening itself began, Y/N was stationed on tour duty with the rest of the prefects, so headed to the entrance in await to be assigned a family. She passed C/N who was stood at the door, pointing families in direction of the assembly hall. "Is it an exciting job?" she asked.

"Oh, yes. Very much so."

"Great- have you seen the maths department's costumes?"

"No?"

"Then look forward to it," she beamed, walking inside to the reception.

During the actual tours, Y/N saw him from the distance a lot, but had to remain focused on the family she was touring. Everything inside of her wanted an opportunity to talk to him, laugh with him- do anything with him. But the chance never seemed to come.

At the end of the evening, she was exhausted and sat down by the entrance with a cup of warm tea. It was a struggle to keep her eyes open, but as she looked over at C/N joking and laughing with a group of people, she felt the familiar pang of jealousy. Sure, he probably didn't like her back, but she could hope.

It's not like she intended on confessing, so she would just settle for pining from a distance.

But no matter his feelings, it had been a good day.
