High hopes was what she had had. High hopes for her relationship with O/C/N. When he had asked her out back three months ago her heart had been light and happy: her stomach full of butterflies that made her feel alive. She had been crushing on him for a year beforehand, and certainly hadn't expected him to want to date her. Of course, now it kind of seemed like he didn't want to date her, and never had.

Y/N could remember the exact moment he asked her to be his girlfriend, and which exact words he used. They had been in the canteen together, and he had come up to her table and done it in front of all her friends.

"Hey, Y/N," a cool and relaxed smile was on his face, "I think you're really cute... and I was wondering if you'd be my girlfriend?"

Maybe the fact he hadn't been at all blushing at the time should have been a red flag he didn't actually want a relationship.

As the weeks went on, it appeared more like they had become even more distanced than they had been before. They had gone from acquaintances to total strangers. So, Y/N put in the effort to make him gifts and bring him cards, and eventually after one month they went on their first date. It didn't feel like a date.

They strolled silently through the park, except, it wasn't a comfortable silence. Tension and awkwardness had weighed down on the air the entire time; like something had to be said but never was. During the entire walk, they never even held hands. To Y/N, it felt like coincidentally walking at the same pace as a random stranger.

All of the dreams of how amazing a relationship with O/C/N would be were flushed down the toilet after a mere couple days with him. Denial is what had caused her to try and stick with something that wasn't there.

Valentine's Day had been no better. He didn't even bother responding to any of her texts about what they should do for it; and wasn't in school that day either. O/C/N never even brought the topic up nor apologised afterwards. And, as a result, as the pathetic excuse for a couple reached their three month mark, Y/N found herself developing feelings for one of O/C/N's friends. The friend of his that always apologised for his behaviour and gave her sympathy and kindness when O/C/N did not, which was all the time.

C/N.

Y/N found herself hanging out with him in the corridor just after school had ended. She was laughing, and it was the first time in a while she had. Only C/N held the power to cheer her up: she was closer to him than she was to her boyfriend.

"Y/N," the voice of her boyfriend said monotonously from behind, "Come."

Sighing, she smiled at C/N and said, "I'll see you tomorrow."

"Bye, Y/N..." a look of sorrow flashed over his expression.

Y/N gave one last look of joy to C/N, before yelping as her wrist was grabbed by O/C/N. She found herself being dragged down the corridor quite forcefully, the initial shock meaning it took her a while to match his pace and not stumble. He wordlessly led her to a hidden corner not far from the school, an unreadable look on his face as he turned her to face him.

"Stop spending so much time with C/N," he said firmly, eyes glaring into hers.

"Why?" she frowned, tilting her head.

"You're my girlfriend," that very comment made anger begin to grow within Y/N's very core. He had the audacity to say that after acting like nothing but a stranger the past three months?

Y/N crossed her arms with raised eyebrows, "Yeah? Well it doesn't fucking feel like it, Mr Doesn't-Put-Any-Effort-In," she spat back, "You've acted like nothing but a stranger to me, so don't you dare get mad at me for spending time with another boy when I am the only one actively trying to maintain a relationship with you."

His silence was expected, but him looking to the side with a strained expression was not. Normally in an argument he would fire back with something after a few seconds of being quiet. "Look, Y/N... I never liked you romantically. I was dared to ask you out and then when you admitted you had a crush on me I felt bad so I decided to act distant until you left me yourself. You never did, and I never developed feelings for you either."

This was something she should have expected. She knew he never wanted a relationship with her. "You bastard," she said lowly, "You telling me the truth back then wouldn't have hurt as much as you telling me it now. I'd have gotten over it. But this... this... it will mock me internally for the rest of my life..."

"I'm sorr-"

"Save it." she snapped. "Don't ever talk to me again."

Y/N stormed out the alley, immediately pulling out her phone and dialling C/N's number. He picked up within a few seconds, his tone as bright as it always was when he said, "Hey!"

"C/N..." she sobbed, making worry instantly fill his heart on the other end, "Did you know that O/C/N asking me out was only a dare?"

An audible sigh was heard, followed by, "Yes... look, I'm sorry I didn't tell you I jus-"

"It doesn't matter," Y/N said with a sniff, still hurriedly walking down the pavement, "I just broke up with him."

"Really?" his voice was light once more, making Y/N's lips tug upwards in a small but still sad smile, "I'm so glad... I've been trying to get him to tell you the truth for months now."

"Yeah..." Y/N chuckled, "Guess I kinda realised I thought of one of his friends as more of my boyfriend than the boy himself."

C/N asked the inevitable but dumb question of, "And which friend might that be?"

"You, silly," she said, "I may have... well... gotten a crush on you while in a relationship with someone else...?"

"Well, I developed a crush on my friend's girlfriend. Looks like we're both disloyal."

"What are you doing right now?"

"Right now?"

Y/N hummed in response.

"Well, I'm at home... why?"

"I'll be there in ten."

And that was the beginning of their relationship: their relationship that met Y/N's original high hopes of what a relationship should be.
