Y/N wouldn't call her life the greatest, but she also wouldn't call her life the worst. Financially and physically, her life was great: an abundance of food and home space was more than anybody needed. However, mentally and emotionally was a hugely different story.

She was a princess; that was a fact. A princess of a small kingdom that was, despite its size, highly respected among nearing countries. Except, underneath the sugar coating life wasn't all that amazing. When she was only three, her mother had passed of cancer. Her father had grieved for years, but finally fell in love again when Y/N was twelve and remarried.

Unfortunately, Y/N's new stepmother and queen was only nice around her father and clearly only in it for the money. Two stepsisters came with her, one of them thirteen and the other fifteen. They were only nice around her father as well.

What made things even worse was that Y/N's father was so love struck he ignored all of her complaints, so she stopped making them. Now, Y/N was eighteen with her stepsisters nineteen and twenty one. It was coming to the time where the king and queen were getting offers for arranged marriages for their daughters. And that very day a suitor was coming to spend a weekend to pick his bride.

Rumour had it he was a very handsome prince from the much larger and widely known kingdom two countries over. Tying bonds with them would be a great help for the considerably smaller place they had.

It was half an hour before his arrival was due. Y/N found herself dressed up in a pretty pale blue satin gown which was actually quite comfortable, with her stepsisters wearing identical lilac dresses. They were sat on the steps of grand staircase of the entrance hall, prepared to stand up and look elegant to greet the prince.

"I bet he's super handsome," Y/N heard the oldest stepsister, Carmen, fan girl.

"I've heard he's twenty six! I love an older guy..." Bella piped in.

Sighing, Y/N fidgeted with the big bow on her hip. Depending on how nice the prince was, she wanted to be the one he picked not because she wished to get married, but because she wished to get out of this hellhole. There was no point trying to woo him, however, as Carmen then said angrily towards her, "Don't you try and fuck this up for either of us, Y/N."

"She can't anyway, she needs both parents' permission to get married," Bella said gleefully, "You know mother will never agree to it."

The attention was turned, gratefully, from Y/N back to the possible attributes of the prince. Meanwhile she pondered over staring at the huge grandfather clock's hands tick noisily by.

The time struck five o'clock.

Standing up and straightening their gowns immediately, Carmen and Bella pushed in front of Y/N as the huge front doors were pulled open by the butlers. The three of them stood in a row, but with Bella pushing Y/N slightly behind with a scowl. Y/N's father and stepmother appeared out of nowhere with their arms linked and their best attire on, smiles adoring their faces.

Out of a carriage just in sight, a gorgeously handsome prince with glowing skin and fluffy hair climbed out. He had on a crisply ironed tieless suit; the top button was undone but he still looked stunningly professional.

All the soldiers and butlers bowed as he entered through the huge entrance. He arrived closer to the royal family and smiled politely at the monarchs with a bow, before turning to the princesses. Y/N immediately bowed out of respect, while her stepsisters did not and instantly introduced themselves with their hands held out to kiss.

"Princess Carmen," the brunette smiled smugly, "It's an honour."

"Princess Bella," the younger cut off, also grinning evilly, "It's also an honour."

The prince glanced at their extended hands but ignored them, his eyes flicking to the nervous-looking Y/N who had her eyes cast down, "And you are?"

"Y/N," she curtsied politely, "Pleasure to meet you."

"Prince C/N," he pressed his tongue in to his inner cheek, his eyes locked on Y/N's, "I will assume you know why I am here."

"To pick a bride..." Bella giggled, twirling her hair.

Y/N's stepmother took a step forward, "Carmen and Bella are beautiful, well-mannered ladies. They are more than ready to marry."

C/N seemed to instantly glance at Y/N with the smallest of frowns etched on to his face, but it seemed as if the cogs working in his brain came to a conclusion when he saw the blue-dressed girl take on a split second melancholy expression.

"Come through to the dining hall, Prince C/N," the king gestured, "One must be starving after such a long journey."

Dinner was a slow meal, mostly full of Carmen and Bella going on about their achievements with aid of their mother. C/N didn't say much, nodding along as he ate his meal in near silence.

In fact, Y/N didn't hear him speak properly until much later that night.
