Song: "You Belong With Me" - Taylor Swift

this song takes me back

————————

To C/N, it was a day like any other. He had suffered through the 'educational' lessons of the day, before heading to the changing rooms to prepare for the one thing he looked forward to every day: basketball practice. It was the school's focus sport, so practice was on everyday, for both the boys' and the girls' teams. There were two basketball courts in the school: one in the sports hall, and one in the gymnasium. The gym had bleachers, unlike the sports hall, and that was where the boys practiced, whereas the girls practiced in the sports hall.

When C/N was finished changing, he walked out with his teammate, C/B/N, and chatted to him about gameplay all the way on to the court. C/B/N began shooting hoops as C/N checked to make sure that, like usual, the mysterious bleacher girl, as he called her, was already there. She was, as normal, scribbling away in an exercise book a few rows up, not even sparing a glance to the boys on the court. C/N didn't know her name, and she wasn't the only person who came to watch basketball practice, but she was the only consistent one, and also the only one who never did any actual watching.

That's what made C/N notice her. She would, without fail, show up to each and every practice and game, but would never observe them. All she would do was sit there and do homework, never speaking a word to anyone. C/N never saw her around the school, and he certainly couldn't recall her from any of his classes. Maybe that was because he was a part of the popular crowd, and she was clearly shy and scattered when faced with such extroverted people. C/N wasn't extroverted; he just hung around with extroverts, and had somehow become the basketball captain.

One thing that had never happened before, was that when basketball practice actually begun, one of his teammates hit the ball so badly it went flying in the girl's direction. In all fairness, the teammate had slipped on the floor where someone had spilled a drink, but that didn't stop the girl from crying when the ball hit her smack on the cheek.

Her lip had quivered for a second or two as she looked at the ball that had bounced off of her and was rolling around a couple rows below. Tears had been pricking at her eyes, threatening to come out, but what really did it was the realisation everyone was looking at her. The tears then came out in floods, and she stuffed all her belongings in her bag before running out of the gym sobbing uncontrollably. C/N looked between the teammates and the gym door, before saying, "Clean up the spillage and continue practice. I'll check she's alright."

And with that, he followed her out of the gym, but not before grabbing an emergency ice pack from the gym first aid kit, only to find the corridor empty of life. If she hadn't gone home, it was most likely she was in the girls' toilets, so he located the nearest ones and tapped gently on the door. He didn't receive a response, so pushed it open to peer in slightly, allowing him to catch sight of all the cubicles vacant, except one. It had a familiar bag pushed against the door that he could see through the gap below.

"Hey," he entered to tap on the cubicle door gently, "I'm C/N, the basketball captain... my friend didn't mean to hit you... are you alright?"

All he heard was a sob in response.

"What's your name?" he said gently.

Still, nothing.

"I don't bite, I promise."

Finally, he heard some movement within, which was the shuffling of the bag and the turning of the lock, before a tear-stained face peered round the door. She stared at him blankly, visibly shaking.

"Hey," he said, giving his softest smile, "Can you talk?"

She nodded hesitantly.

"Would you mind telling me your name?"

"Y-Y/N..." she whispered so silently he barely heard her.

"Y/N?"

Again, she nodded.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Y/N. Here, I have an ice pack for your cheek."

Nervously, Y/N opened the door wider and stepped out. It was only now he noticed that she wore a hoodie underneath her blazer and tucked into her skirt, which made her look drowned out. He also couldn't help but notice the hoodie sleeves poking out the blazer ones, and almost entirely covering her hands. C/N held the ice pack out to her, but she didn't take it, and instead looked anxiously up at him. In the moment, he didn't know what he was thinking, but he held the pack up to her cheek. The initial contact made her flinch, but he could tell she appreciated the coldness against her reddened skin.

"Y/N is a very pretty name," he said gently, making her other cheek redden.

"Thanks," her, again near-silent, voice spoke.

"Do you think you are ready to come back? My friend will feel bad if he doesn't have a chance to apologise."

She seemed to think it over for a few seconds, but eventually bobbed her head in a yes, taking over with holding the ice pack. C/N led her back outside the toilets and to the gym doors, where he felt a small hand slip into his. He looked back in curiosity to see Y/N almost instantly look mortified at her actions and pull back again, before he reached out to take her hand in his once more.

"It's okay," he squeezed her palm, "I'm here."

When they entered the gym, eyes flicked to them, making Y/N tuck herself behind C/N in fear. She still held the ice pack to her cheek with her free hand, and watched from just around C/N's arm as the teammate that had hit her approached. "I'm so so so sorry!" he practically begged, bowing comically, "I didn't mean to hit you, I swear!"

All Y/N could do was curve her lips up ever so slightly in a polite smile, nodding her head just a little bit. He looked relieved at her somewhat positive response, so smiled sheepishly before heading back on to the courts. "Wait for me afterwards," C/N said to Y/N, squeezing her hand one more time before letting go and rejoining his team.

He didn't hear her when she mumbled, "Okay," because he was already back to practice.
