who doesn't love a good soulmate au~

——————

Black and white was what Y/N was used to, just like every other human of whom hadn't met their soulmate. Grey was all she had seen since the very day she was born, and she wasn't particularly bothered by it. She didn't know what she was missing and she knew deep down the chances are she would meet her soulmate and get to see it. When she did, she would cherish it.

Most people met their soulmates ages sixteen to thirty, although there were always exceptions. Some people didn't soulmate bond at all. But Y/N's hopes were up. There was one consistency with timing of soulmate bonds: they always happened on the younger one's birthday. Whichever one of the birthdays that may be.

So, on her sixteenth birthday, she showed up bright and bushy tailed at school with her uniform ironed. She had never ironed it before. In her bag was the finest school lunch she had ever prepared: a chicken and lettuce wrap with chilli sauce and a sprinkling of cheddar cheese; a small cupcake decorated with glitter; a packet of salt and vinegar hula hoops; and a green apple. Green apples were superior to red apples. Full stop. Obviously, Y/N couldn't actually see much of a colour difference but she could read packaging and taste flavour.

Strolling down the corridor, Y/N found herself being tackled to the ground by none other than her best friend. B/N. "Happy birthday~!" she sang, "Merry birthmas!"

"Thanks," Y/N said, pushing her off, "I was in a good mood until you crushed my lungs."

"Ha... sorry 'bout that..." B/N rubbed her neck sheepishly, helping Y/N up, "I'm just excited! Maybe you'll meet your soulmate?"

"Well, there's always a chance," she smiled, "But I mustn't be disappointed if today is not the day. It may not even be my birthday it happens on."

B/N shrugged, "You don't seem like the type to date someone younger."

"I don't think we get a say in that," she said, "Plus, I don't really care."

"Anyway... have you heard there's a new boy in the year above us?" they began walking together in direction of their coincidentally neighbouring lockers.

"No one usually cares when there's a new kid..." Y/N frowned, "Why notice him?"

B/N giggled, "He's crazy hot. I've made eye contact with him already so he's not my soulmate... but... he could be yours!"

"Doubt it..." she sighed, "If he really is crazy hot then he's probably not mine."

The pair of them put away their backpacks in their lockers but kept a couple of the books they needed, then turning to walk around the nearby corridor corner. Y/N found herself slamming in to something mildly hard making her head throb as she only just successfully managed to prevent her books from falling. She glanced up at the cause for her coming migraine to be met with a boy she had never seen around before.

Their eyes met, and suddenly, Y/N didn't care about her headache anymore.

Colours were splashing off of him and spilling over everything nearby: reds, yellows, blues, greens, purples, etc. She could tell them apart by the fact they had been taught which shades of grey were what growing up. Now she could put an actual colour to them.

"Uh... happy birthday...?" he spoke awkwardly. He had to be the new kid, as he was indeed crazy hot.

"Uh... uhm... thanks..." she mumbled, "How'd you know?"

"Well, it's not mine," he said with a shrug, making Y/N facepalm at her stupidity, "I'm C/N, by the way."

Smiling up at him, she said, "Y/N. It's my sixteenth today."

"Oh, you in the year below?" he asked, to which she nodded.

In all honesty, she had only half heard what he had said. She was taking in both his ravishing beauty and the pure oddity that was colour. Nothing had prepared her for how it actually looked, but holy shit was it amazing. Nothing had prepared her for how he actually looked, but holy shit was he amazing.

"You're very pretty, y'know," he grinned, holding out a hand, which she nervously took, "Didn't think this was how my first day would go."

"Neither did I..." she said softly, "Well- I mean- I didn't think my birthday would go this way."

Y/N glanced to the side to see if B/N was still present, to see her holding out her phone blatantly recording the encounter occurring. "Don't mind me," B/N waved her hand dismissively, "I'm just documenting this for your wedding day."

The bell cut through the air like a knife; C/N looked up at the shiny what-must-be red thing, "Hey, d'you wanna meet after school? Outside the gates?"

"Yeah- sure..."

"Great, see you then..." he said, pecking her cheek and running off to wherever his class was.

B/N finished recording and exchanged a brief look with Y/N before beginning to scream excitedly, "Holy shit! He's your soulmate!"

"Yeah... he is... isn't he?" she let her fingers brush over the spot he kissed with a small smile lacing her pretty features.

He soon turned out to be more than she had ever imagined.
