Song: "Happy Pills" - Weathers

astraphobia = a fear of thunder and lightning

———————

Rain hammered against the window panes of the boarding school's dorm building; most students asleep and unaware of the crashing thunder and lightning outside. All the ones that were awake were soothed and calmed by the sound, safe in the knowledge that they were inside and warm. Well, almost all of the students.

A young girl named Y/N was absolutely petrified: shaking and sobbing uncontrollably under her covers at the sound. She had always had a fear of storms, but she didn't really know why. According to her parents, even as a baby she would cry non-stop during thunderous nights. The fear made her feel weak and pathetic, so Y/N hardly ever mentioned it and generally tried to deal with it by herself.

Unlike when she was little, there was no parents' room for her to go into and cuddle in. She was by herself. Even her friends weren't there, as it was the Easter Holidays and they had headed home. Y/N's parents had had to go on a business trip, so she had to stay behind. There was only one person that could comfort Y/N still in the school: her crush, C/N. Normally she would be too shy to even go near him, but embarrassing herself was the last thing on her mind. All she wanted was somebody else's warmth to snuggle up to.

So, Y/N slipped out of her bed, her special teddy tucked under her arm, and nervously made her way out of her room and down the corridor. The boys' rooms were the floor below; usually the corridor would be locked from girls entering, but the holiday housekeeper was too lazy to bother.

Before knocking, she tried C/N's door to see if it was locked or not. The doorknob easily spun all the way, allowing the door to be pushed open. He had most likely not bothered to lock it as hardly any other boys had stayed behind.

Just as she was all the way into the room, some more thunder rolled, making her freak out. Shutting the door quickly, Y/N practically pounced on to the bed as she pulled the covers over her. Astraphobia had gotten the best of her and thrown embarrassment out the window. Like a magnet, Y/N sensed C/N's warmth and felt herself moving towards him. He was still fast asleep, very much unaware of the terrified girl next to him.

To her pure horror, Y/N watched as lightning flashed through the thin curtains and lit up the room for a split second. She found herself on top of C/N, clinging desperately on to his figure as she crushed him to death. The lack of oxygen was what woke him up.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?" he snapped, groggy at being woken up. When he noticed Y/N was shaking, he backed down.

The fear in her eyes when she looked up at him innocently pretty much described it all. Thunder rolled once more, making her bury her face into his chest. C/N then saw her teddy strewn to the side of him, abandoned now its owner had a new and improved sense of comfort.

"Hey, are you okay?" he asked softly, letting his hand move up to stroke her hair.

"Storms..." she sobbed, "Storms..."

"You're scared of storms?" he said, already knowing the answer.

Y/N nodded against his chest, wrapping her arms and legs around him tighter as sobs escaped her throat. Mildly annoyed at the inability to breathe, C/N rolled on to his side and brought her with him. He wrapped his arms around her as she curled up into him, still trembling as the rain continued to tumble down.

By this point, tears were pricking at her eyes in the dark, her soul consumed with unexplainable terror. C/N held her close to him, eyes open but tired.

Eventually, he asked, "What makes you scared of them?"

Y/N shook her head against him, making him confused, until she mumbled, "Don't know... irrational..."

He nodded solemnly.

It didn't take long for Y/N to drift off to sleep now she felt much safer, but C/N found himself remaining awake. He was savouring the moments in which she was wrapped in his arms, as times like that were exceptionally rare. His heart was racing at the thought she may like him back; why else would she have chosen to come in with him? Then again, he was the only friend of hers still there.

Soon C/N was dormant again as well, feeling relaxed and a little bit protective. They cuddled with each other for the rest of the night, and the scolding they got from school staff the next day was definitely worth it.
